Eagles At Jets: Who Flies Higher?

To get you ready for Week 6, FanHouse is previewing all of this week's NFL games, here is the Philadelphia Eagles-New York Jets preview.

2007 Record:

Philadelphia Eagles: 1-3 (4th in NFC East)
New York Jets: 1-4 (t-2nd in AFC East)

Last Week:

Eagles - Bye
Giants 35, Jets 24

When the Eagles have the ball: When last we saw the Eagles they were being sacked a dozen times by the New York Giants. That's unlikely to happen against the other New York 11 since they have mustered three whole sacks in five games. Making it even less likely is the miserable run defense the Jets employ which should find the Eagles using Brian Westbrook a lot more than they did on their last trip to the Meadowlands. For all the focus on Donovan McNabb, Westbrook is the most dangerous weapon at Andy Reid's disposal and he'd be wise to use him at every opportunity. The pressure is on Dewayne Robertson to be a disruptive force in the middle of the defensive line, something he's failed to do each week this season. If he fails again, Westbrook will run wild.

When the Jets have the ball:
This may be the most important game of Chad Pennington's career. If the Jets again fail to score points and lose the calls for Kellen Clemens will be impossible for Eric Mangini to ignore. An intelligent and poised passer, Pennington simply can't throw the ball deep and teams are hip to that fact. They load the box with players, disguise coverages and make it hard for him to find Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery. He also can't utilize his considerable play-action skills because the offensive line and Thomas Jones haven't done anything in the running game. That probably won't change this week. Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley will make life miserable for the underperforming Jets guards and Jones isn't the elusive runner who can succeed by making people miss.

The Edge: The Jets offense is a complete mess right now and the Eagles defense can't give them a chance to get going. They are more talented across the front line and should be able to pressure Pennington without the blitzes that Jim Johnson loves so well. The Eagles offense isn't overly impressive either but if they keep things in Westbrook's hands they shouldn't have any problem moving the ball.

Keep an eye on:

The Jets uniforms - A bit of a reach perhaps but the Eagles won their only game so far while wearing their throwbacks and the Jets will foresake their beloved green for these blue-and-gold numbers. Maybe a new look will change the fortunes for a team headed in the wrong direction.

The punters from down under - This game will be on at 3 A.M. on Monday in Sydney but Australian fans of the NFL will likely be tuning in to watch two of their own booting balls. Ben Graham and Sav Rocca are Aussie Rules vets who are doing a great job in the NFL.

Leon Washington - The replacement for Pro Bowl returner Justin Miller has taken two kicks back for touchdowns already this season. On a Jets team devoid of explosiveness Washington provides some. The Eagles can't let him get loose.
