I'm a Manny Ramirez fan. Ever since he was playing right field for the Indians, he's been one of my favorite baseball players. Simply put, the man is one of the best hitters I've ever had the privilege to see in my lifetime of watching this game. That said, there is one thing about Manny that I can't stand. The way he admires his home runs. It's not just when Manny does it, it's anybody. I've long been of the opinion that when you hit a home run, you can look at it for a second if you want, but then just put your damn head down and start running to first base.
Obviously, there are exceptions to this rule. If it's a walk-off shot, like the one Manny hit against the Angels, then by all means, admire your work. You just won the game, you deserve a little time in the spotlight.
But what Manny did last night, that was just idiotic. In the 6th inning of last night's Boston loss, Ramirez followed Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz in going back-to-back-to-back with home runs. After Manny hit his frozen rope out to right-center, he stood at the plate and raised his arms in the air before starting a slow walk to first base.
It's as if Manny didn't realize his team was still losing 7-3, and they were on the verge of going down three games to one in a best of seven series.
The Indians and Red Sox get the day off today before resuming their series with game 5 in Cleveland on Thursday night, but if I'm Cleveland, I don't forget it. Sure, the Indians are probably going to have the final laugh when they move on to the World Series, but I think I'd send a message to Ramirez before moving on.
I'm not saying C.C. Sabathia should bury a fastball in Manny's back, but I think he should buzz his tower. Just remind him that sometimes Manny being Manny is more like Manny being a douchebag.
