Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White made extensive comments at his UFC 77 press conference about the big issue facing UFC, and White insists that there's no way heavyweight champion Randy Couture can fight for any other mixed martial arts organization before he fulfills the remaining two fights on his UFC contract. Mr. Sunshine quotes White:"He lost twice to Chuck Liddell. And then he called me up after a year and said I want to come out of retirement...I'd like to re-work my contract. He just signed a contract that he was thrilled with eight months ago. He never came to me and said can we do a new contract!"
On a possible fight outside the UFC White said, "He definitely belongs to me. He just signed a new contract eight months ago."
Meanwhile, what's going to happen to Couture's heavyweight title? Although Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports reported that the winner of Saturday's Brandon Vera-Tim Sylvia fight at UFC 77 would meet Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for the vacant heavyweight title early next year, White said he's not ready to concede that Couture is done yet. White says he still wants Couture to defend his belt. Couture and White appear likely to end up in court.

Nogueira?? Are you freaking kidding me? He almost got beat by Heath Herring. There is no way he deserves to coast into a title match like that. He at least needs to have one more match beforehand. I think the winner of the Sylvia/Vera match should fight the winner of a match between Nogueira and either Andrei Arlovski or Gabriel Gonzaga. Right now they are the top 4 heavyweights in the UFC... Wow, how sad is that?

Dana White, like all ego maniacs, is extremely insecure about himself. With giant ego's comes alot of insecurity hidden underneath to go with it. He has to control this, and that. He's a control freak, which quite simply means if you peel back the layers a bit you have a very insecure person. A man's worst enemy is somtimes his own ego. Dana better watch himself, or someone is going to knock his block off.

I am sure alot of people are disapointed in Randy wanting to call it quits in the UFC. As a mixed martial arts fighter I understand he wont wanna do it forever. I'm sure he's just humble with his accomplishments. Every warrior deserves to find peace. I think Randy should be respected for all he's done. If you ask me all the hype and dramma is BS... So sorry to see that so many have so much to say. If you have never experienced a being in a real fight I'm sorry but ya'll dont know what you are yapping about. I think there are alot of guys out the who are not yet noticed by promoters and such who can teach those UFC guys alesson. Who knows when the next generation will be pressent.. Fighter keep getting better and better and change should not be feared. I'de do anything to catch the eye of some promotor. Anything, would you??? Rather than watching Ben Rothwell of IFL fight TiTo Ortiz I would like to challenge either of them. And yes I am arogant. LOL Enjoy the fights... Hope to see y'all on TV.

I have been a huge fan of Randy Couture and have enormous respect for what de does in side the Octagon... But having listened to his press conference I have to think that he's getting some very bad advise; either that or he's spending too much time in Hollywood and lost touch with the real world.
Even someone straight out of school will tell you that the best time to negotiate your contract or salary is before you sign. Randy questions the press at the conference and asks them how they would feel if their boss brought someone in earning a ton more then they were - the answer is simple - its tough luck. If you don't like your contract because someone negotiated a better contract... You wait till your contract expires and re-negotiate a better contract - if you don't get the terms you want then you go elsewhere. But picking you bat and ball up and heading home in a sulk is imature - I have no doubt what Randy's contract says - but if he contract for "X" number of fights then the UFC have every right to expect him to deliver.
As for the issue of Dana White and the apparent calls for him to step aside - are you friggin kidding me? This guy, more than anyone else has brought MMA into the mainstream. He works with fighters from all over the world and created a global tradmark - the fact that Randy's resignation is such a hot topic is down to him. If we were talking about American Idol or Dancing with the Hasbeens then I might agree he's a bit rough around the edges - but he works with fighters, and he does a bloody god job.
Hopfully Dana and Randy will get this thing resolved without making the lawyers rich - I hope so.
The UFC and the Heavyweight division needs Randy Couture - it will be a long time before someone else legitimizes the heavyweight belt the way Couture does - its just such a pity that Fedor said no because that truly is a fight for the ages!

A heavyweight tournament is the only way to truly get your next champion. I'd like to see at the very least your top eight guys in elimination matches. I realize due to the economics involved this may not be feasible. However, any tournament that does not include at the minimum Andrei Arlovski and Gabriel Gonzaga (Sylvia and Nogueira seem to be locks) would be meaningless. Dana White can't just create a match with the fighters He feels are the most marketable and call the winner a champion.

I think this a classic example of "nice guys finish last". Randy is a remarkable athlete, a superb wrestler, and most important, an great person, a great role model. When I think of Randy, I immediately think of the UFC. For the same reasons that Randy's fans love him so much, he could well be taken advantage of by Dana White and the UFC organization.
I can't speak to the details of Randy's contract, nor the details of the disagreement but I beg Dana White to swallow his pride, put aside his conceit and stubborness, and make things right for Randy. If anyone in MMA deserves it, he does. He's an icon of the sport, an icon of the UFC, and he should be compensated the same.
Sure Dana can say, "He signed his contract", "he didn't say anything about not being happy with the money", on and on, but Randy has too much pride to lash out and bite the hand that has fed him all these years. You guys know what is fair, what Randy deserves. Now please apologize, give him a fair shake, and move forward. Please... do it for the fans.
