Well, maybe it will be a Rascal motorized scooter. Maybe something else. He is going to be getting around via a motorized scooter for at least the next week. Dave Wannstedt tore his Achilles tendon yesterday and had surgery on it and for good measure had arthroscopic knee surgery.Wannstedt explained that he had partially torn his Achilles last summer and had the choice of going through rehabilitation or waiting until after the season for surgery. Compounding the situation, he injured his knee during a charity run in June and needed arthroscopic surgery. The injury puts Wannstedt up in the coaches box for this weekend's homecoming game against Cincinnati for the, ugh, "River City Rivalry" trophy (a picture can be found here). Offensive Coordinator Matt Cavanaugh will be on the sidelines in his stead.
The Achilles had been bothering Wannstedt all season and he occasionally wore a protective boot during practice. On Tuesday, while walking down the hall, he made a sudden turn and his heel ruptured. Considering he was already having one surgery, he had the knee scoped, too.
The injury has Wannstedt joining starting WR Derek Kinder, QB Bill Stull, OT Jason Pinkston and DT Gus Mustakas on the sidelines -- all with season ending injuries. Not to mention top reserves, DE Doug Fulmer and OLs Chris Jacobson and Dan Matha.
