This is depressing: former Super Bowl I hero Max McGee died yesterday after falling from his roof. The former Green Bay wide receiver was 75. He's probably best known for catching the first touchdown pass in Super Bowl history (see the visual proof above), and occasionally giving head coach Vince Lombardi agita:
Inserted into Packers' lineup when Boyd Dowler was sidelined by a shoulder injury, McGee went on to catch the first touchdown pass in Super Bowl history in Green Bay's 35-10 victory over Kansas City in January 1967. Still hung over from a night on the town, McGee caught seven passes for 138 yards and two TDs....That, simply, is awesome. Rest in peace, big guy.
McGee had caught only four passes for 91 yards during the 1966 regular season and, not expecting to play against the Chiefs, violated the team's curfew and spent the night before the game partying. Reportedly, the next morning he told Dowler: "I hope you don't get hurt. I'm not in very good shape."

2. From Stan and Jan Johnson. We wanted to send a card to the family to express our sincere deepest regret but could not locate an address. We have friends in Mpls that will send us the obituary. We were terribly upset and shocked over the news broadcast this morning. We still can't believe this tragic accident. Our prayers and love reach out to the family.
In case my first email did not come through. We worked with Max at the first Chi Chi Mexican Restaurant in Richfield "Maximillians". I was the Manager and my wife Jan was the hostess.
Again, Our Love to the Family

3. To the McGee family. Please accept our condolences from myself Stan Johnson and my wife Jan. We worked with Max at the first Chi Chi restaurant at 7717 Nicholett Av So location. Jan was the hostess in Maximillians. He attended our wedding reception held at Maximillians. What a guy!! We will never forget Max's generousity and fun loving approach to life. We have always had love in our hearts for Max and will never forget him. If it wasn't for Max and Maximillians Jan and I would have never met. I might be able to find some pictures if you would like.
All Our Love

4. My deepest sympathies to the McGee family. I have been a Packer fan since the 1950's. Max will always have a special place in our hearts. The Packers set the standard for other teams when the Superbowl began. I never hear a McGee story that didn't make me laugh. He will be missed.....

5. Max was a vintage Packer, the Vike backers just don't understand the Pack backers and their love for the Packers. We will miss Max. I also frequented Maximillians when it first opened, it was a great place and it was owned by a Packer right in the heart of Vike land.
