Price Check on Dontrelle Willis

For most people a visit to the supermarket costs you money. Maybe you pick up a free sample of something or save some dough with a coupon but usually it's the market that comes out ahead in the transaction. Matt Sosnick's latest trip to the Piggly Wiggly, however, could keep him and his family in fine leathers for quite some time to come.

Sosnick, you see, is the agent for Marlins lefty Dontrelle Willis and while he was flipping frozen pizzas in the cart he happened to bump into team President Larry Beinfest. He took the opportunity to ask when they might discuss a new contract for the pitcher who has been the subject of many trade rumors. He liked what he heard.
"He said, 'We plan on Dontrelle being here, so we'll plan on doing it the normal time,''' Sosnick said Sunday.

The normal time is presumably November and not while squeezing melons. Beinfest's indication aside, its probably too early to pencil Willis into teal for 2008. The Marlins aren't expected to go beyond $30 million in player salaries and with Willis due for at least $7 million, he made $6.45 this year, he'd be taking up a sizable chunk. Throw in Miguel Cabrera's $10 million or so and the Marlins will be pushing their cap after signing just two of their 25 players. I'd expect the Marlins to solicit offers for both men and it wouldn't be surprising if one or both is buying their Cheerios in a different city next season.
