The Red Sox and the Rockies each made roster moves today for the World Series that will affect their rotations. The Red Sox have dropped Tim Wakefield from their roster while the Rockies have added starter Aaron Cook to theirs in advance of Game 1 tomorrow night. Denton fills you in on the Wakefield move elsewhere on the FanHouse. The Rockies will use Cook as the starter in Game 4 in Denver. Cook, Colorado's opening day starter, has been out since August 10th with a strained oblique muscle. He went 8-7 with a 4.12 ERA in his 25 starts and his activation will send rookie Franklin Morales to the bullpen. Morales started a game in each of the first two series but didn't pitch into the fifth inning either time because Clint Hurdle made moves to get more offense. Taylor Buchholz, active but unused in the NLDS and NLCS, was dropped from the roster.
Colorado gets one of its best and most experienced starters back in Cook. He's a sinkerballer, which serves him well at Coors Field, and doesn't walk many batters, which serves him well everywhere. He hasn't pitched in two months, though, and could be rusty after such a long layoff. It's a calculated risk by Hurdle but in such a big spot against a strong Red Sox lineup you can't argue going with the veteran over the rookie.
