An interesting point from The Hater Nation: This Subway commercial appears to be making a joke at the expense of NFL referee Ed Hochuli:
First, the ref in the commercial is wearing No. 85. Hochuli wears No. 85. Secondly, the ref in the commercial gives a long, detailed explanation of his call, which is one of Hochuli's trademarks. And third, the ref in the commercial is skinny. Hochuli is huge. OK, that's not a similarity at all. But still, I think the first two are more than just coincidence -- they had Hochuli in mind when they made this ad.
