Lions 44, Broncos 7: Umm ... Believe It

So about them Lions -- they're for real.

The Broncos aren't really the cream of the AFC, or even the AFC West, or even Colorado (I think citizens spend their Sunday afternoons watching Tivo'd replays of Rockies games), but they're a decent enough team in what is considered the better conference, and the Lions absolutely crushed them.

Last week, it was the Lions' secondary, beleaguered throughout the offseason, that came through with four interceptions. This week the defensive line had their turn. Someone lit a fire under Shaun Rogers, who notched 2.5 sacks and a quarterback mauling*, giving Jay Cutler the ole' luxurious ride back to the trainer's room. Then the 340-pound Rogers got a step on a tipped screen pass, intercepting it and returning it 66 yards for a touchdown, stiff-arming (!!!!) Selvin Young along the way.

Two things: 1 - Has Rogers had a better day in his life that didn't involve a strip club?; and 2 - How slowly do you have to throw a screen pass, a play predicated on quick ball release, for a rush to get to it, leading to a 340-pound tackle intercepting it? DeWayne White also got into the endzone, returning a fumble three yards. It was a banner day for the boys up front.

The offense did their part, as well, with 376 yards of offense, two touchdowns in the air and only one turnover, but this day belonged to a defense that had five sacks, recovered three fumbles, had one interception and defensed seven passes. They also held the Broncos to just 47 rushing yards, despite it being just a two possession game at half.

There is no excuse for Denver to lose the way they lost today, scoring one meaningless touchdown right before the last two-minute warning to spoil the Lions' shutout bid. Injuries to Cutler and John Lynch only mean so much, it certainly doesn't excuse a 44-0 crushing made only slightly better thanks to a garbage-time prevent defense. Just an embarrassing display by the Broncos.

Or maybe the Lions just really are that good?
