Why Sign Alex Rodriguez When You Can Trade for Miguel Cabrera?

Alex Rodriguez and Miguel Cabrera
The Yankees (and most recently, the White Sox) have been publicly named as suitors for Miguel Cabrera, but the New York Daily News reports that there will be more competition for the young slugger. How much more? Try at least 10 different teams, among those, pretty much everybody that's remotely in the Alex Rodriguez Sweepstakes. From Mark Feinsand:
The Angels, Dodgers and Giants have plenty of young players to offer, and each of the three West Coast teams is in the market for a big-hitting third baseman. The Red Sox and White Sox are also believed to be interested in Cabrera.

Both Los Angeles teams are interested in speaking with Scott Boras about A-Rod, but Cabrera might prove to be a cheaper alternative, one that would cost them players instead of a few hundred million dollars.
Yes, A-Rod will outproduce Cabrera in the short-term, but will he outproduce him by $20 million a year? Not a chance. And whatever organizational depth a team loses by trading all their prospects to acquire Cabrera can be made up in time by pouring at least some of the difference in salary into scouting and the draft.

Every year top players slide in the draft for so-called "signability" concerns, but the salary demands of even a top prospect pale in comparison to the big boy dollars that A-Rod is commanding. If Cabrera will earn $10 million after arbitration this year, there should be buckets of money of left over if the team that lands him was even considering signing A-Rod. Take that, invest it in young players and you should get the best of both worlds.
