The Yankees (and most recently, the White Sox) have been publicly named as suitors for Miguel Cabrera, but the New York Daily News reports that there will be more competition for the young slugger. How much more? Try at least 10 different teams, among those, pretty much everybody that's remotely in the Alex Rodriguez Sweepstakes. From Mark Feinsand:
The Angels, Dodgers and Giants have plenty of young players to offer, and each of the three West Coast teams is in the market for a big-hitting third baseman. The Red Sox and White Sox are also believed to be interested in Cabrera.Yes, A-Rod will outproduce Cabrera in the short-term, but will he outproduce him by $20 million a year? Not a chance. And whatever organizational depth a team loses by trading all their prospects to acquire Cabrera can be made up in time by pouring at least some of the difference in salary into scouting and the draft.
Both Los Angeles teams are interested in speaking with Scott Boras about A-Rod, but Cabrera might prove to be a cheaper alternative, one that would cost them players instead of a few hundred million dollars.
Every year top players slide in the draft for so-called "signability" concerns, but the salary demands of even a top prospect pale in comparison to the big boy dollars that A-Rod is commanding. If Cabrera will earn $10 million after arbitration this year, there should be buckets of money of left over if the team that lands him was even considering signing A-Rod. Take that, invest it in young players and you should get the best of both worlds.

Why sign Alex Rodriguez when you have Mike Lowell? The Red Sox are assembling an unbeatable lineup for 2008 and Alex Rodriguez can only wish he was part of that lineup.

Well, if Cabrera was going to cost them $10MM for the next ten years, the Marlins obviously wouldn't trade him. He'll be cheaper than A-Rod for the next two years, but after that he's a FA will be making well upwards of $20MM/year.

Yes, any team acquiring A-Rod will boost their team's attendance record, will improve their power production for the regular season, and yes, A-Rod's numbers will be great for the short term. However, when playoff comes around, he will strike out with men on base, and as a result, fail in the clutch. Who needs a guy who will ask for the moon in terms of money, yet not contribute in getting his team a ring!!

The Yankees should trade Alex Rodriguez for Miguel Cabrera or Mike Lowell.

More imprtantly than anything else first after re-signing Posada is that we need a righty power bat to fill in the way
Bernie williams used to do inbetween all those leftys
We can chase Torii Hunter or Andrue Jones? but do we really want to
do that?
We can use stop gaps Andy Phillips who should be more featured this
year with the raw power of Shelly Duncan
But to me we need to pursue that trade of Miguel Cabrera and see if
we can get Dontrelle Willis to boot
I know he "Miguel Cabrera" gets the moniker of being fat lazy and
likes to party and eat too much, but Giardi likes him, and you're not
getting any closer to Manny then that and Dontrelle Willis too he's 2
years removed from a 22 game winner Put these guys in a new winning
athmospere who knows what they can do, they can revitalize? Guys like
Miguel Cabrera dont come along every day! at worse he can DH play 1b
or even RF if needed, and you know he can hit!

I am sick of hearing how A-Rod is the greatest player in baseball. I just don't see it. All I've seen from him is useless contributions and choke performances. Hitting 30+ homeruns a season in games when your team is already winning by 4 or more runs is nothing. Especially when you can't hit the ball when your team is losing late in a game (or is in the post season). Am I the only one who thought it was a sign of the appocolypse when gAy-Rod got a walk-off homerun? It was the first time I had seen him do anything when his team actually needed him. This guy is worthless. I think any team dumb enough to sign him gets exactly what they deserve: A professional choke artist.

Once the Yankees solve their third base problems
they will recapture the division title. They made
a great manager selection,Girardi will eliminate
some of the emotional choices that Torre was prone
to make these past few years. The young pitching staff led by Jaba,Hughes,Wang, etc. and the young
guys Cano,Cabrarra, will continue to give the team
an enthusiastic attitude. Arod is all about himself
and I think that whoever called him Mr.April and
Ms.October hit the nail on the head,he is a late
season head case,a guaranteed strike out in the
playoffs.

I have never like Boras and A-Rod is very hungry for the millions of dollars. He is more interested in the millions than the game and his relationship with the tem players.I hope that the owners get smart and no G.M hires A-Rod for an enormouse cost.Let Boras and A-Rod fall flat on their faces.

Cabera is wonderfully talented but he is also fat and lazy. The Dodgers don't need thT - especially at the price of young talent.

I disagree with the comment "Yes, A-Rod will outproduce Cabrera in the short-term." Maybe he will, but it shouldn't be stated with such 100% confidence. Their most important stats (on base %, batting average, slugging %) are very close over the last few years. A-Rod typically gets a few more RBIs per year, but that's because he plays in the American League & has all-stars hitting in front of him & behind him.

All this has nothing to do about the rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox. Lowell will stay in Boston, A-Rod will go elsewhere but it will not be to the Angels. I agree that aquiring Cabrera in exchange for young talent is the way to go. The Angels over the past few years have been listed at the top as far as having the best minor league talent among all the MLB teams. Well it's time for that talent to come through either with taking the next step and producing on the major league team or being traded to bring in experienced talent like Cabrera. We never recovered from letting go of Troy Glaus and expecting Dallas McPherson to fill his shoes. Brandon Wood has been mentioned as a phenom for three years now. He still has yet to make an impact on the major league club. The Marlins want Kendrick and pitching. Maicer Izturis stepped it up when Kendrick was injured last year and we do have quite a few young pitchers on the roster. I'm we can afford to lose one of them. It's time to make a move Angels. Having a pair of Cabreras on the left side of the infield and on either side of Big Daddy Vladdy in the lineup will be the boost we need to get us over the top. Make the move!!!
