The WWE is furious with CNN for the way it edited that interview and has posted this statement on its official web site:
In a country in which the news media is highly suspect, and the quality of unbiased reporting has been thrown into the trash can, CNN has stooped to new depths. Notwithstanding the fairness, or lack therein, of CNN's recent piece entitled "Death Grip: Inside Pro Wrestling," perhaps the best example of how CNN misrepresents and unfairly presents their biased, if not illegal, point of view is the comparison of WWE's unedited video above to CNN's edited version. CNN's depiction of John Cena as it relates to steroids is not only professionally and morally wrong, but damaging to his character. So what did CNN make the interview look like? See it after the jump.
I have to agree with the WWE here. The way the interview was edited was unfair, taking out the part where Cena states clearly that he hasn't used steroids and leaving in an ambiguous, out-of-context statement.

Pretty pathetic that a "news" channel would attempt to destroy somebodies reputation like that for ratings. I'm sure its done all the time though.

CNN are completely out of line for the way they have edited this in a "Homer Simpson on Rock Bottom" style, but Cena didn't help matters by giving a rambling, two minute answer. If he had ended it on "absolutely not", there wouldn't be all this trouble.

Whats the big idea? WWE wrestlers are actors and not athletes anyway. The only people that do more steroids than those pretend athletes at WWE is Joe Weiders Pro body builder side show. And by the way thats where Cena started at as a gym rat body builder. He used to used roids but he's clean now.

at some point can't a person or organization sue CNNor those other cable channels that out & Out simply lie. This could cost many millions dollars to a company. The sad part is most American's are so dumb they will take this as truth, that's why Bush and his lying, stooting folks in the face, perverts are still running the U.S. and out kids are dying everyday! Can't anyone find or tell the truth anymore? Johnny

First I would like to reply to the moron that said wrestlers arn't athletes. If that is the case then anyone, even someone like you could do it, right? I don't it! It may be scripted, but I am sure that falling off a 20ft ladder hurts no matter what. As for CNN. What a joke! I agree that he could have just simply said no and left it at that, but he is right. No matter what answer he gives someone will turn it in to a big hoop-la anyway. What ever happen to people takeing someones word for something and not turning it on them unless they can prove it is a lie! Time for the news companies to start reporting the new and what fits with their own views. If you want to do 2nd rate reporting like that, go work for a tabloid!!!!

This is the liberal news media at its lowest. This isn't the first time, nor will it be the last that CNN does something like this.
The American people have let the leftist media attain way to much power. People refuse to think for themselves and are being led down the path they want us to be on.
We've turned into a nation of lazy misinformed cowards and better wake up soon.

I think what CNN did is straight out wrong. I am a John Cena fan and have never thought that he would ever do anything like that. I think that John Cena should sue CNN for defamation of character because what they have done will tarnish his character in the eyes of other. I think that the owner of CNN is trying to ruin WWE standing because he no longer has WCW wrestling and he wants to mess up Vince's standing.

This has nothing to do with liberalism or "the leftist media." Fox does the same thing; so does MSNBC and so does your local newscast.
Understand something about all newsmedia: their job isn't and never has been to report the news. Their job is to turn a profit for their owners. To that end they'll all pretty much do or say anything they think they can get away with so that people will watch and talk about them, as we're doing here.
Professional wrestling is an easy target and deservedly so. That said, this story wasn't exactly news; neither was it an exposé. It was just another way to get advertisers on board.

CAN WE TRUST ANYONE ANYMORE???
I have lost all respect for CNN now. I used to trust what they were saying on the television, but after watching the stuff they edited out (along with the stuff they took out of proportion, like when he says "i cannot tell you that i didnt, and you'll never be able to prove that i did"), i dont know who to trust anymore.
When Cena said what i quoted, all he was saying was that no matter what answer he gives, they will twist it to make him look bad. So he said that for the sake of his sanity. He basically plead the fifth, a constitutional right that we all have (or should have), and it got blown out of proportion.

In my personal experience being around steroids such as HGH for a very long time, I know what they do and I know the side effects. You still need that skill factor and determination to do well, with or without them. You will find the people that just want to "Bulk up" will not last five minutes on them. CNN took what could of been a very good and educational interview and turned it in to a witch hunt against talented athletes that have pride and determination. At the end of the day, who would you want your children to turn out like? people that take pride in thier body and have that determination or a junkie on the corner that puts other crap in their bodies?

C'mon... Cena didn't exactly confirm it, but he didn't really deny it either. He's just a crappy liar. I'm a huge WWE fan and love pro wrestling, but real talk, this dude PROBABLY is on steroids just like most wrestlers (and a fair percentage of other pro athletes) PROBABLY are on steroids. People know wrestling is scripted, so monitoring steroid in wrestling is a little different than other sports because betting on wrestling is like betting on the outcome of a TV show. Fact is, Cena's a dumba$$ for even attempting to meet CNN on middle ground and (kind of) admit it. That's why WWE is doing so much press on it, plain and simple. And again, I stress, I love WWE. I don't care if they kill themselves with steroids - I love the product regardless. But let's be honest, the dude probably is on steroids and just has a slightly cleaner conscience than most (which is why his subconscious made him admit it). CNN didn't edit the clip where he said "I can't say I never did it, but you'll never be able to prove I did." C'mon, what more do you need than that sentence?
That being said, I honestly hope WWE performers continue doing steroids rather than having irreversable injury after taking big hits in the ring (steroids are often used to rebuild your body after injury). And furthermore, who cares? That's like blaming someone for selling you your first rock after you've become a helpless crackhead... it was the individual's choice first and foremost.
(Just thought I'd be the one WWE fan on the entire fuc

kin' internet to take a step back and look at the issue fairly. If you really can't see the steroid use in professional wrestling - whether it's a "problem" or not - you might as well go buy the 20" plastic ladder match action figures, because WWE owns you.)

It's a shame Bin Laden didn't hit the CNN building. But then again what do you expect - It's Ted Turner's company. Just because of Benoit WWE gets a bad name. Anyone who truly thinks that all wrestlers are on steroids are as brain damaged as Benoit or just plain upset that their life is in the toilet and looking for someone to blame!

Look, whether we all agree that wrestling is fake or real is all opinion, and that's not the issue at hand. The point is that CNN is one of the biggest news networks and they carry the reputation of having the upmost journalistic integrity when it comes to the material they produce. That wasn't the case with John Cena. He bluntly said that he had not taken steriods. And instead of showing the viewers what Cena said in the first place, they convieniently edited the footage and took Cena's words out of content. Now, if that isn't losing journalistic integrity I don't know what is. Everyone will have their opinions on sports-entertainment. Some will love it, others will despise it. The fact is, no matter WHO the interviee is, they deserve to have the TRUTH and FACTS stated for them at ALL times. Not just when it best benefits the network.

To whoever said that John Cena isn't really hurt, have you seen the pictures of his surgery on WWE.com? That being said, what CNN did was wrong on so many levels and just goes that those people aren't really concerned with the truth and will do anything to get their point across. Wrestling may be scripted, but that doesn't make it any less painful. And it is definitely a sport. I would like to see an everyday Joe do what the WWE does on a weekly basis. As for Cena using steroids, that is such a lie! If you want to look at steroid use, why don't you focus on baseball?
