Let's just make sure we all understand something: Adam Vinatieri is not a good kicker. He used to be, a few years ago, although even then he was overrated because he was on a good team that gave him lots of opportunities to kick in big games.
But now he's not good. He's not average, either. he's bad.
It's not just the fact that he missed two field goals in tonight's 23-21 loss to the Chargers, including a 29-yarder that would have given the Colts the lead with less than two minutes to play. It's the fact that he's horrible on kickoffs. It's the fact that he hasn't made a 50-yard field goal in five years. It's the fact that the Colts have no more reason to be confident in Vinatieri right now than they would have if they brought back -- gasp -- Mike Vanderjagt.
Throw in the fact that Vinatieri is the highest-paid kicker in the league, and there isn't a single team in the league getting less bang for the buck out of the kicker position than the Colts. Please, football media of the world. Stop pretending Adam Vinatieri is a good kicker.

I totally agree. Vinatieri does not make clutch kicks any more unless its under 37yards. But he has totally proven me wrong this evening. Even rookies coming of the bench can make a 29yard field goal. I neve thought Vinatieri was a good kicker to start off with. He was a good kicker, key word being "was". Colts need to invest in a nice kicker from college and mold him into a great kicker. Because Adam Vinatieri is not cutting it anymore....

What a stupid blog lol The guy is money, and has always been money. You are kind of putting the blame on his shoulders when it should be noted the Chargers are some lucky suckers because of home field advantage. 1. I will give you the first,Adam missed a 29 yarder. 2. Some lucky drone runs back 12 points for them. 3. The pass interference not called when the cornerback chopped Reggies hands off before the ball got there. 4. Marty isn't around. That was the luckiest win I ever saw in football and I hate the Colts.

I'm still shocked. I know Peyton threw 6 interceptions, but he brought his team back to win the game. Regardless, Adam Vinatieri should have made that field goal. Do not blame this game on the defense, blame it on the special teams. The special teams lost this game, I don't care about interceptions. Chargers got 13 free points off special team plays. Only 10 came off actual offense. The Colt's defense showed up.

Really? What the hell do you call the 50-yard field goal against Kansas City in last year's wild card playoff game, and the next week's 51-yard field goal at Baltimore in the divisional playoff rounds?
Really, I'm curious to know.

As a Charger fan let me thank Mr Vinatieri for today's victory. Our great offensive genius Norv Turner, took a team no one wanted to play to one that had 177 yards of total offense today. We cannot beat a good team unless they let us. Perhaps the Colts are tired of having a great offense and would like to take Norvell off our hands. Please contact A. J. Smith, our GM. He loves Norvell but if a fair trade was offered, say a dirty jock strap, for Norvell he might go for it. I hate to say so but the best team lost today.

Once again, I am impressed at the Patriots' diabolical knack with personnel. Somehow they seem to get the best of any trade. Decent players become good when they get to the Patriots, and good players become great, whereas "star players" who leave the Patriots become revealed for the scarecrows they are, like Feathertop when his pipe has gone out. Vinatieri is just the latest example of this phenomenon.
Bill Belichick must have made a deal with the devil. It's the only possible explanation that fits the facts.

I'm sorry but, Adam vinatieri sucks. i thought it was a stupid idea when the colts signed him, and still think the same. The guy missises in every "clutch" game the colts have had. he missed last year at New England twice. He missed last week against the patriots, which ended up costing the colts the game. He missed twice this week against the SD charges, which cost the colts the game again. He disgusts me.

Adam Vinatieri is "Mr. Clutch" I think you confused him with Mike Vanderjagt for the Colts.
No, but in all seriousness. The two losses that the Colts have had all came down to the fourth quarter. I just don't understand how Adam is missing all these key fieldgoals, especially if he's supposed to be "Mr. Clutch".

Duh... He is a great kicker. He has won many games on last minute Fg's... As in 2 Super Bowls? Don't blame his two misses... peyton had 6 picks morons!! But the biggest blow to the Colts was the premature whistle on the pick in the endzone.... the guy #55 ran it back to the 6-7 yard line of San Diego..... inadverdent whistle??? Don't Blame Adam. As much as I hate his stupid ass!!! He beat my Rams in '01!!!

Tired of hearing those Superbowl winner Colts!!! Pats gave them that chance when Caldwell dropped 2 touch downs put in his hand by Brady!!

I agree that he's clearly not what he once was, but to suggest he was never that good to begin with is purely idiotic. The man won two superbowls, and even last year single-handedly won a playoff game for Indy. Clearly he has lost it this year, but come on man, try to be a little less reactionary?

Also... it was raining. Pretty hard from what I understand.
Might explain some of the weirder things that happened during the game... although it was interesting as I watched it in SD, but no charger fans were around. In fact, we all assumed the Colts would win. We even called the last pick by the Colts 2 plays before it happened. When that FG didn't make it... wow.
Anyway, Vinatieri might not be great, but he's not necessarily bad based on this off game. And he still has a chance to save these Colts - they've dropped 2 straight, but they're the defending champs, and they're gonna be going deep in the playoffs.

Vinatieri left the Pats for the money - to get a few more million. When you're already making that much $$, a few more million is like fake money - it's not like being an average joe and getting $2 million
more. Had he not chase the Mighty Buck, he would have stayed a hometown favorite and had a supportive team. He chased the Buck - and crashed.

that was possibly the most amazing 6 int games I;ve ever seen a QB have. That 6 int games is still better than a 6 td game from carr.....if he could ever get one.

You damn Colt fans need to stop your bitching. You paid all that money for Vinateri and kicked Vanderjact to the curve and now he misses a couple of kicks(not nearly enough to call for his job) and your already wanting to run him out of Indy! I guess that why the Colts left Baltimore, they finally told you to quit your damn crying and so they threw a temper-tantrum and left for Indiana! And of course you have the perfect poster boy in Peyton to show that image! It's time for you obnoxious fans to face reality that you, that is the Colts, ARE GOING TO LOSE GAMES, YOU CANT WIN THEM ALL JACKASSES! Go get a damn pacifier and shut the hell up! The Colts are now ranked third behind the Steelers and Patriots in the AFC (and will continue to fall) and fifth in the total NFL behind the previous two plus Green Bay and Dallas. It's great to see all your hopes crushed and to see those airheads and puffed up chest be deflated! See that fly by, it's your chances of even making it to the AFC Championship game! HAHAHAHA!

Well, I don't know if San Diego deserved to lose or the Colts just didn't want to win the game? That was the worst game to ever watch-only for the fact that there could've been a good ending-depending on who you were rooting for. I understand that any team cannot go virtually undefeated through a 16-game season (although the Patriots seem to be knocking on that door). Adam Vinatierri is human. He does have the Super Bowl kicks under his belt, and at least he's no Scott Norwood. Both organizations should've paid the fans for attending that game! Goes to show, the problem w/ the Bolts lie in 2 words, Norv Turner. Whenever he gets fired, I hope he doesn't resurface again. Norv and his buddy, the 2nd worst coach, Dave Wanstedt.

I believe Indy got rid of Mike Vanderjagt for the same reason, missed important field goals. I hated to see Vanderjagt go, and would like to see him come back to Indy. With said Adam Vinatieri has helped the colts in some key games (last year). I hope his kicks improve with the rest of year.
PS: Just in case, I say bring back Mike Vanderjagt.

I don't know why I'm defending Vinatieri as a hardcore pats fan, but I believe that last 29 yarder was missed due to the fact that he was rushed on to the field with bad weather and it was ultimately a bad coach's decision not to take a time out then. I believe this loss is equally placed on the shoulders of Tony Dungy, Peyton Manning, and Adam Vinatieri. So stop pointing the fingers and suck up the loss.
Ps-
I hope Vinatieri likes his new team just like Johnny Damon likes being a turncoat traitor and watching his former team bring home the world series, because that's exactly what the Pats are going to do this year as well. A repeat of 2004.
