Dennis Rodman is in the news, which isn't all that surprising considering he's a renowned publicity hound. This time, he's looking to break into the coaching fraternity (sorority?) starting with a job in the WNBA. Atlanta is getting a new franchise, and The Worm is throwing his hat into the mix to lead it. From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:"I love the city of Atlanta," Rodman said through a spokesman, adding that he's spent a lot of time here recently. "... Atlanta would be the ideal situation, starting from scratch."Terwilliger suggested that Teresa Edwards, a former All-American at Georgia and current assistant with the Minnesota Lynx, is one of the leading candidates. I'm not sure I've even heard the name Teresa Edwards before five minutes ago, but I'm already convinced she'd be a better choice than Rodman.
Not so fast, said Ron Terwilliger, the owner of Atlanta's new franchise, which will begin play in 2008. While hiring Rodman would surely drum up national interest in Atlanta's yet-to-be-named team, Rodman lacks a few essential ingredients Terwilliger is looking for in a coach - starting with sideline experience.
[...]
"We need someone who knows the league, knows how it works, knows the players and knows the college talent coming up," Terwilliger said. "And we'd prefer to have a women's coach since it's a women's league."
You think lack of head coaching experience is what's holding Rodman back? Try the fact that an organization headed by Rodman would make MSG's work environment look like a Saturday morning cartoon. Road trips would be week-long orgies, and we'd probably see the first "DNP-STD" appear in the box score.

Tired of these former players always wanting to coach - those that have been coaching all their lives should be given first shot. Just because a person was a great player like Rodman - does not make them / or really should not make them an obvious choice.

First Deion Sanders wanted to be head coach of the Atlanta Falcons despite having no head coaching experince and now Dennis Rodman wants to coach the WNBA team in Atlanta. Advice to Dennis win basketball games or the honeymoon with the Atlanta fans will be short and bitter.

Barely familiar with five-time Olympian Edwards, one of the few athletes to make five Olympic teams in ANY sport, Winter of Summer games? A rather lame admission to say the least. Sorry, but if your response is that you really don't care about women's basketball then you shouldn't have crafted this blog to begin with or at least shouldn't have mentioned her name. Rodman is an obvious attention freak and the kind of person who will periodically utter things simply to see what kind of reaction they get, so you'd have to be extremely dumb to believe someone as irreverent as he is would have any serious interest in committing to coaching in the WNBA or any other league.

A WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM SOULD HAVE A WOMAN COACH. THERESA EDWARDS IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF WHERE TO START LOOKING. BEGIN WITH HER, ADD FOUR OTHER QUALIFIED CANDIDATES, THEN HIRE THE MOST QUALIFIED. DENNIS RODMAN, NO, NO.

Sorry hon, but simply stating that "a women's team should have a woman coach" is narrow-minded and flat inaccurate as men have proven to be just as capable of winning and genreally relating to and motivating players as female coaches have. Also, fans don't follow good teams led by women coaches any more fervently than they do good teams led by male coaches. Yeah, no men's teams are going to be breaking their necks to hire a female anytime soon (especially at the pro level), but that's a different conversation and doesn't lessen my point.
