The Bears Might Want McNabb, but It's Not Clear McNabb Wants the Bears

I mentioned earlier that Minnesota could be in Donovan McNabb business come the off-season, but they're certainly not the only team interested in the Eagles quarterback. NFC North rival Chicago is also an option, but as the Chicago Sun-Times' Mike Mulligan writes, it's not clear that McNabb, who is from the area, would be interested.
A source close to McNabb said earlier this year that the ship on such a move might have sailed because the Bears didn't have a lot to offer on offense. The offensive line is aging. They don't have a top- flight running back. And other than at tight end, the receiving corps -- wide receivers and backs -- would need a major upgrade to attract a front-line quarterback.
Hard to refute any of that. Plus, as Mulligan notes, who knows if Chicago will even be in the market for a quarterback come spring. That's not to say they shouldn't be; Rex Grossman and Brian Griese aren't long-term solutions, and Kyle Orton, while probably the most attractive choice, isn't necessarily a guy you want to build a team around.

Even if the Bears manage to land McNabb, how long until they have to think about replacing him? One NFL executive suggested that McNabb would be a stopgap in the mold of Steve McNair in Baltimore, which falls under the soft bigotry of low expectations, I think.

In the short term, though, McNabb's not a bad way to go. Especially if he can be had for a third-round pick.
