Michigan fans have expected Lloyd Carr to retire since 2004, and really really expected him to retire this year, as the bulk of his offensive stars will either graduate or depart for the NFL draft and a rebuild will be in order. MGoBlog, which, full disclosure, is run by me, is now reporting that the decision has been officially made: Three separate sources indicate that Carr has made his decision to retire official and people around the athletic department are being told. The formal announcement will come after the Ohio State game, possibly at the Monday press conference, possibly a day or two later. You are welcome to take this with some skepticism, as it is the Dread Internet Rumormongering we have all been taught to fear and loathe, but this is multiply-sourced and, (obviously) IMO extremely trustworthy.
Les Miles is believed to be the first name on Bill Martin's speed dial; Panthers DC Mike Trgovac and Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz are other names being batted around.

Agreed, Mark. Ferentz seems kind of like a lateral move, regardless of Michigan's recent problems.

Bo Pelini who is LSU Defensive Coach will be offered the Michigan Job if he doesn't get offered the Nebraska Job. Don't be surprised to see Carr go to Nebraska. Ferentz isn't going anywhere why would he go to Michigan over Iowa right now it would not be a better move for him.

Carr to Nebraska as head coach? Now that would be interesting, but I sure don't see it happening. That would perhaps make more sense if all the Huskers needed was a tweak here and there, but that program needs a complete overhaul of both personnel and philosophy and Lloyd Carr just doesn't fit well in that scenario given his age.

Hasn't been the same since Bo died? I'm sure he misses him greatly as do many others, but don't overestimate the effect of that on him or the program. We all have a multitude of deaths to deal with as we age ourselves and it's rarely if ever easy, sometimes unblieveably difficult, but life is for the living and goes on until it's your turn and you can never really use the passing of another as an excuse for anything as that's all it is in the end, an excuse. Trust me, if Michigan wins Saturday to capture the Big 10 after a season that's had more than it's share of adversity during times when many have long since left the team for dead, then Carr will feel just dandy about Bo and everything else until they get thumped again in Pasadena.

Carr to Nebraska?
Why would he do this? He is done. Maybe an office at the football complex. Lloyd has gotten more combative with the media before, during, and after games. He has had it. Recruiting has been sliding. My top 3
1. Les Miles
2. Bo Pelini (Nebraska first)
3. Brian Kelly
This has been in the works for a while. Why do you think Harbaugh trashed the program earlier this season? He found out from insiders that he would not get the job after this year......

The buzz around Ann Arbor about Coach Carr's retirement is a big topic. His faithful (mainly fans of his early to mid years, like my father) see him staying and leaving on his own terms (i.e. an “ideal” season including no early slip ups and a post season win). The newer generation of Wolverines sees a need to adapt to the new college football game. The idea of Big Ten football (three yards and a cloud of dust) is a nostalgic thought, something I remember my dad talking from my earliest years of Saturday devotion to Michigan football. That was a different time. While Hart hammers away with his sheer power and obscenely good juking skills, we need to face the music. College football is about running quarterbacks, the spread offense and bomb passes. Michigan doesn't play that way because Lloyd is stubborn and nostalgic. He’s not quite at stubborn as Joe Paterno in the sense of still promoting the old style of football, but Joe Pa has a few years on Carr. He refuses to adapt to the spread offense (think back the Oregon disaster), and a running-based offense can't struggles against the high-caliber defense Michigan competes with. So, ask me if I want Carr to retire, and I'll honestly say "yes". I respect him and what he's done with this program. He is truly a "Michigan Man" and some say the last of the disciples of Bo. In the same breath, his time has passed. The game has changed and he hasn't. I just hope that another one of Bo's own, Les Miles, takes the spot. I can't imagine anyone more fitting. He played here. He started coaching here. It only makes sense that he comes back to Ann Arbor, and if he didn't want to, his contract wouldn't have what many call the "Michigan Clause".

Call me a Michigan homer, but Iowa to Michigan a lateral move? Seriously? I know Iowa's had some success recently, but without looking it up I would feel comfortable guestimating that Michigan has been 10-20x more bowl games in its history than Iowa, and has a much, much bigger national profile in college football. If Ferentz is loyal and wants to stay, fine, but coming to Michigan would certainly be a move up.
