Well, this was sure fast. After Alex Rodriguez announced today he was opening up talks with the Yankees, it looks like a deal is all but locked up. According to Peter Abraham of the LoHud Yankees Blog, A-Rod is set to re-up with the Yankees to the tune of $275 million for 10 years. (Not quite the $350 million Scott Boras was hoping for, huh?)
There are still a lot of questions left to be answered here. As we touched on earlier today, under the collective-bargaining agreement, Rodriguez supposedly isn't allowed to negotiate with teams without the aid of an agent. (As some commenters have pointed out, this is up for debate at the moment depending on how you read the wording.) So, can this go through right away without Boras around?
But that's neither here nor there at the moment. Because most importantly, what turned the tide here? Was A-Rod really that fed up with Boras' antics and -- somewhat out of anger -- went back to the Yankees for less money? (I mean less in a relative sense, of course.) Did both Rodriguez and Boras realize the market just wasn't out there for A-Rod and decided the Yankees were the best option? Was it that no one wanted A-Rod at all?
We'll see in the coming days if any of these questions are fully satisfied.

Here is my suspicion on what Boras wanted all along. He wanted to have teams bid to raise the price on A-Rat. Allegedy, they'll want all the guaranteed money up front. Then when the team files for banruptcy, A-Rod can be a free agent and sign with another team. That would have taken another three years as A-Rod could have been a free agent then. This makes a lot of sense.

I thought there were a few players out there doing their own contracts.
Didn't Curt just reup with the Sox on his own?
If a player wants to deal with a team without an agent he should be allowed to. What would the Players Union have to gain by not letting the players who want to go it alone, do it?
Can someone clarify this?

When a rookie Japanese pitcher can get twice as many postseason RBI's in one at bat than A-Rod has had in his whole career, you know you don't want him on your team later than September. I'm very happy for A-Rod to go back to the Yankees. The curse continues.

I remember a couple of years ago a few articles talking about Gary Sheffield agreeing to a contract with G. Steinbrenner in a waffle house without a agent. In fact, I remember, Sheffield bragging about the contract and how since he negotiated it, he wouldn't have to pay his agent...this is in reference to the players union comments.
Secondly, I'm curious to see what effect this will have on A-rod's status...yes he will be the guy with the biggest contracts, and big stats...but this debacle with Boras seems like another major misstep in what should be a stellar career. This guy seems like he could use someone else polishing his career...For someone who seems to care a lot about how the public percieves him he has some glaring stains. You want to like the guy...but...
I have to say he is more likeable than Bonds, Canseco, Vicks, Packman...but...?????
Lastly, I would like to see Boras with some egg on his face....He too will take a hit...he outfoxed himself and his client...For someone whose job is to make you client look good...A-rod, his biggest client, he will have done the most damage to his legacy.

A-Rod & Boras has played everybody for suckers. The best way to get what you want is to ask for more than what you want, and let your suitors inch up to your price. They ask for 350, didn't get 300, but still made more than he previously had. Don't think the opt-out during Game 4 was part of the plan, but when you're paid, what's a little PR hit?

Even Matsuzaka had more RBI's than A-knob in the post season. Bobby Kielty and Jacoby Ellsbury, who can't even get rookie status because they didn't have enough at bats, both had more home runs than A-knob in the post season. What's that say for him? I'm a Sox fan and I want nothing to do with the best single player in baseball. He brings down the team around him. Just ask Texas who had made the playoffs regularly until A-knob arrived.

In today's dollars, 2007, no ballplayer is worth $275 million over 10 years. I am saying that it is irrational. He will get some amount like that, but it is a real departure from sanity.
He plays baseball. Objectively, if we even should pay people for playing sports that they would play for free--and most of us do--a baseball player should not make more than 20 times what the average person makes. So let us see what an average major leagues player should make. About $1,000,000 per year. Or $10 million over ten years. Why? Because the average term of a ballplayer's career is maybe 5 years. Five good years. So if we pay him $1,000,000 per year, after taxes he keeps about $750,000 (maybe a little more). After five years he walks away with $3,750,000 which, if he lives on $200,000 a year during the good years, still leaves him almost $3 million to retire on at age 35 or so. That's about $150,000 a year starting at age 35. Enough to go to college or learn to be a carpenter. So what about A-Rod? Ten times what the average play makes. $10,000,000 per year or $100,000,000 over the life of a ten-year contract. I would never give a player a ten year contract. Period. I don't care how good he is. So....A-Rod is overpaid by about $175,000,000.
More power to him. If people are dumb enough to pay it, I say, go get it!

The 2007 Yankees were betrayed in the playoffs by exceptionally poor pitching, not A-Rod. They're stronger with him than without him...and they're about the only team that can afford him. If they can sign Mariano Rivera and seriously upgrade their starting pitching, they'll be just fine in 2008.
