By now you've probably seen the bizarre field goal at the end of yesterday's Browns-Ravens game:
The kick was ruled no good on the field, then the officials discussed it, and then they (correctly) ruled it good. The NFL claims that instant replay was not used to make that ruling, as that would have been a violation of league rules.
But I've heard from multiple sources today that you can pretty much count on the NFL competition committee to recommend -- and the teams to adopt -- a rule change this off-season to make field goals reviewable, both with coaches throwing challenge flags and, in the last two minutes of halves and in overtime, with the replay official buzzing the ref.
And really, is there any doubt that they should make this rule change? I'm not a fan of instant replay (I think the delays go on too long), but if they're going to have instant replay at all, it's crazy not to use it if there's indisputable visual evidence that the officials got something as straightforward as a field goal wrong.

1. I don't think what happened with that field goal will be a common enough occurrance for instant replay to be necessary. It will end up that every narrowly missed field goal will be challenged and it will get as annoying as the time out-calling before field goals. I hope they don't change the rules because of a one in a million occurance. It's a knee jerk reaction.

2. All I can say is the field goal was good and it should have been called good in the first place. I think if they are going to use instant replay it should only be when the officials are really at a hard place to call the play.

3. Instant replay is good because it helps officials make the correct calls. What is needed is a blue ribbon committee of technical experts to set up the proper additional cameras in the proper places so that there are no blind spots in the camera coverage. Money should be spent to purchase NASA-type technology. We put people on the moon, surely we can install the right equipment in the right places. Too much is involved, not to do it. Cleveland might, just might, be in the playoffs as a result of that corrected field goal call. I don't think it will happen, but Cleveland could (just possibly) be in the Super Bowl--how important is that correct call then? Teams deserve the benefit of correct calls. Bring on the technical folks and get it done. Way to go AOL! Elsquare.
