Holmes' Injury Could Really Hurt

There is no new update Monday on the status of Santonio Holmes' ankle injury, so we have to hope that Dale Lolley's report from Sunday is true that Holmes was showing few ill effects in the locker room after the game.

While the Steelers may have a seemingly easy game coming up against the Dolphins, it's hard to explain just how much Santonio Holmes means to this passing offense. At this point he's the wide receiver other teams fear--Hines Ward is a solid possession receiver, but he can be single-covered, especially now that he's battling a knee injury. Nate Washington is too inconsistent to be a threat to draw a double team. If the Steelers are going to beat someone deep, it's generally going to be with Holmes--his 17.3 yards per catch average ranks fourth in the league among recievers with 20 or more catches.

Coming into last year's draft, Holmes, Chad Jackson and Sinorce Moss were considered the top three receivers available. Up to now, Jackson (13 career catches) and Moss (12 career catches) have been busts while Holmes has developed quickly into the heir apparent to Ward as the Steelers No. 1 receiver.

Take him away and the Steelers quickly become a team of possession receivers. With games against the Bengals and Patriots coming up soon, the Steelers have to have their deep threat.
