Nebraska Fires Bill Callahan

In a totally expected move, the University of Nebraska fired head football coach Bill Callahan this morning. The move was announced by interim athletic director Dr. Tom Osborne at a 9:30 am news conference.

Callahan leaves Nebraska after four seasons with a 27-22 record, including this year's 5-7 mark. He brought the West Coast offense to the land of the corn, claiming a Big XII North title last season prior to a 17-14 loss to Auburn in the Alamo Bowl.

Callahan's firing has been anticipated for weeks. Leading candidates to replace Callahan include LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and Buffalo head coach Turner Gill. Pelini coached the Huskers to a victory in the 2003 Alamo Bowl following Frank Solich's firing, while Gill is a former Husker quarterback and assistant coach.

All Husker assistants have been guaranteed their salaries through January of 2009. Osborne indicated he has not contacted any potential replacements for Callahan.

UPDATE: The Lincoln Journal Star reports that a search firm has already contacted Bo Pelini.
