In a totally expected move, the University of Nebraska fired head football coach Bill Callahan this morning. The move was announced by interim athletic director Dr. Tom Osborne at a 9:30 am news conference.Callahan leaves Nebraska after four seasons with a 27-22 record, including this year's 5-7 mark. He brought the West Coast offense to the land of the corn, claiming a Big XII North title last season prior to a 17-14 loss to Auburn in the Alamo Bowl.
Callahan's firing has been anticipated for weeks. Leading candidates to replace Callahan include LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and Buffalo head coach Turner Gill. Pelini coached the Huskers to a victory in the 2003 Alamo Bowl following Frank Solich's firing, while Gill is a former Husker quarterback and assistant coach.
All Husker assistants have been guaranteed their salaries through January of 2009. Osborne indicated he has not contacted any potential replacements for Callahan.
UPDATE: The Lincoln Journal Star reports that a search firm has already contacted Bo Pelini.

Bo Pellini has also been rumored to be a strong behind the scenes choice of Texas A&M to replace Dennis Franchione. He"resigned" in time to avoid the tarring and feathering he so richly deserved. It looks like Bo has an excellent chance to wind up as a head coach at a tradition-rich school{Nebraska} or a Top 25 wannabe/could be school at TAMU. Either way,it beats pickin` up towels for minimum wage at LSU!!!

Maybe they can get out of the contract under deceptive practices.
The evidence:
A former athletic director pretending to be competent and a coach pretending to be a coach.

Paul Johnson will be the next Nebraska coach. Knows how to do more with less at Navy, averaging 8 wins a season (out of 11 game schedule) with 2 star athletes. Winner of 2 national championships and 4 time 1-AA coach of the year at 1-AA Georgia Southern, he is a proven winner that can bring Nebraska back to their glory. By the way didn't Jim Trussell come from a 1-AA school.

It is the best thing to happen since Steve P.(AD) made the ridiculous decision to fire Frank S. with a 9-2 season. Probably won't happen, but as a rabid NU fan, it would be great to see the staff that was fired to be brought back and start where we left off---winning and be respected as one of the greatest football programs in the country.

I like that Osborne is still associated with the program when Nebraska gets some payback for running up scores for all those years under him.

Let's not get too carried with the integrity thing.
Remember Coach Tom played a guy in a bowl game that almost killed his girl friend. Still the program needed this change. It was sinking fast under Solich also. There havebeen no big wins for awhile. I will Solich give credit. His teams would beat up on the Ball States of the country. No coming from behind at home to edge out The Little Sisters of the Poor.

At 104 years old should Tom Osbourne really be making big decisions. Nebraska was a pretty decent team last millinium but now the leather is gone from the helmets. Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden rumored to be top candidates.

Billy C never was a true Nebraska coach - he was just a coach who happened to take a paycheck (fairly large too) from UNL. He never did understand the fans, the state, the players, the walkons, and the traditions that made Husker football what it was. He was just a Hail Mary from Steve Pederson after Steve fired Frank Solich. Onward and upward! Go Big Red!

its about time nebraska woke up and fired callahan. as an ou fan it pains me to see nebraska down like this. the ou-nebraska rivalry was one about respect. hopefully tom will make a great hire and ou and nebraska will meet in many big 12 title games like it should be. good luck to the husker nation on anyone you hire.

Good move getting rid of Callahan, but please spare me the BS about Osborne's "character and integrity." Under his "leadership" the Huskers were the Raiders of the Cornfields, only with more criminals. Lawrence Phillips. Christian Peter. Need I say more?
He's a hell of a football coach, though.

#8 Great post Tim. I'm a graduate of Georgia Southern and Paul Johnson had to follow a legend, Erik Russell. Paul was able to maintain the excellence and win 2 more championships. He'd be a great choice for Nebraska.

Love them HUSKERS win or lose!
The HUSKERS will soon be a power to reckon with. One, maybe two years. Team seems to have the talent, and hopefully the DR. can find someone to put the puzzel together, obvious Callahan couldn't!
Now, to all you HUSKER haters.
The HUSKERS have had a few problems with players and the law. Lets see if you can name a few that haven't. In the days where HUSKERS would lay out 60-70 points on someone, the DR. was doing it with everyone that was in uniform that day, it may have included the waterboy. The HUSKERS were so deep, that the second half had 2,3,4 and maybe even 5th teamers in there. Unlike some schools that left the top unit in the entire game.
LOVE THEM HUSKERS!!!
GO BIG 12

If I was Paul Jonhson. I'd stay at Navy and keep collecting my 1 mil salary. As much as I like Turner Gill, we know its Bo Pelini's job to lose. Although if I'm Bo I may want to see if I can get my hands on LSU job that no coach wants to keep for long.
