ACC official Ron Cherry is the Shakespeare of our time, inventing jargon at his whim. I mean, giving someone the business is common enough but not as applied to officiating.
Enjoy a fourth quarter moment of levity from yesterday's Maryland - North Carolina State game.

That's not a new call at all. That was made famous over 20 years ago in the NFL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Zkom-6wMnw

Mr. Grummell, you are showing either ignorance, youth or a sheltered life. The call was made famous in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl between Penn State and Miami...right after the famous Vinnie scooter accident.

Chris,
It was passed along in our internal emails without any link to whatever blog found it first. Glad to know Mr. Irrelevant was all over it, will gladly credit next time if it's shown to us something comes from you guys beforehand.
I don't really follow the NFL and don't remember it from that Fiesta Bowl game. It's been almost two decades since its last mention, cut me some slack here folks.

the referee's name was Fred Dreith and I believe it was a Jets game where he made his " while he was down, he was giving him the business "

I was there and I could not believe it. It was like a technical foul in basketball. NC State was already losing by 30 something when the call was made. It became the rallying call for the remaining few people at the game. It was worth staying around for.
