You might have noticed a lot of chatter lately about the possibility of an NFL team moving to Toronto -- and how many believe that an NFL team in Toronto might end up killing the Canadian Football League. Well, CFL officials quietly let everyone know their stance on an NFL team in Toronto -- by hiring Lenny Kravitz to perform at the Grey Cup Final halftime show on Sunday. This had me scratching my head when I heard about it. After all, Kravitz is definitely not Canadian, not to mention hasn't been particularly relevant since the 1990s. Why was he playing the CFL halftime show?
The second song in his three-song set revealed all:
American woman, said get away
American woman, listen what I say
Don't come hangin' around my door
Don't wanna see your face no more
Coloured lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
There is no possible way that was an accident. Message sent, CFL. You realize, though, that you just made Roger Goodell even more determined to destroy your 12-man, 3-down, 110-yard gridiron game before decade's end. Good luck fending off the impending invasion.

The Canadian version of football is light years better than the boring NFL.

While it doesn't matter to me whether or not Toronto gets a team, I doubt it will be the death knell for the entire CFL.

You do know that "American Woman" is a song orignally done by the Canadian band "The Guess Who" as an anti-American song. I don't think this is off the mark as several people had the same type of comment during the Grey Cup.
Canadian fans will stay with their teams as opposed to switching support to a NFL team, just ask the fans in Saskatchewan who have waited 18 years for a Grey Cup win, or the Winnipeg fans who last had the cup in 1990.

An NFL team in Toronto probably wouldn't kill the CFL. It would however, very likely kill the Argonauts and could ruin the T-Cats or a Renegades revival as well.
I don't see the NFL in Canada significantly hurting the 5/8th of the league West of Toronto. The league itself could go on without the Ontario teams. Halifax has wanted a franchise forever (they were granted a conditional expansion team in 84 that never played a game) and Saskatchewan and Quebec could easily support another team each.
And no, the CFL isn't more exciting than the NFL.

Here's a radical thought, why doesn't the NFL just merge with the CFL.Just add the 8 teams of the CFL with the 32 teams of the NFL. If the WHA could merge with the NHL & the old ABA,with its red, white,& blue basketball, could merge with the NBA,then why couldn't the CFL & NFL merge? Ottawa & Los Angeles loses out,but there would be more excitement in the NFL & the divisions wouldn't be radically changed.

the Canadian fans will eat this up like they do everything US (ie: hollywood, second city, etc). I see some of you suggest a merger. That wouldn't be out of the question but is North America ready for the riots that would ensue over the adaptation of CFL/NFL rules?

The CFL is a perfect example of what is wrong with a socialist system. The CFL must be protected, the CFL must have rules that restrict the number of 'import' players. This means that the CFL can only be mediocre since football is primarily an American sport therefore the best players will tend to be Americans. Just as most of the best hockey players in the NHL come from Canada, because hockey is a Canadian game. If a sports league wants to prosper it must have the best available athletes playing, no matter where they come from. The NHL is the model that the CFL should follow if it wishes to thrive as a unique league. But, the very best thing the CFL could do is to become part of the NFL preserving it's identity by joining as two whole divisions. (one in the AFC, one in the NFC) The NFL could even adopt a couple CFL rules, like motion behind the line of scrimmage, the 18 game season and even the rouge. Adopting free enterprise football would even help the Canadian college game, which now is unknown. It would be good for football, good for business, good for players, and fans. For example, I would love to see the Miami Dolphins play a January game against the Edmonton Eskimos. There's another good thing for you Canadian fans, INDOOR STADIUMS the NFL would insist on them for most of your cities.
