Mixed martial arts fighter Sam Vasquez died Friday, apparently of injuries he suffered during a fight five weeks ago, making him the first person ever killed in a sanctioned mixed martial arts fight.Although the Houston Chronicle reports that the cause of death is still to be determined, Vasquez had been hospitalized since he was knocked out by Vince Libardi in the third round of a fight on Oct. 20 at the Toyota Center in Houston. He was knocked unconscious and suffered a seizure after the fight, and suffered a massive stroke while hospitalized.
Some will no doubt react to the death of Vasquez by calling for mixed martial arts to be banned. But a more appropriate reaction to this tragedy would be to institute stricter regulations and greater safety measures. There are risks inherent to mixed martial arts, and while those risks can't be eliminated, they can be reduced.
The 35-year-old Vasquez was fighting his third professional MMA fight. He leaves behind a wife and 7-year-old son.

And what exactly would those stricter regulations and safety measures be? Le me suggest no more punching and elbowing and kicking. That should do it.

Typical...... Boxing averages 11 deaths a year and MMA has its first and now you want stricter regulations only for MMA? How many die a year from playing football? Give me a break......

Mike- You're an idiot. Boxing gloves would make the problem worse. It's been shown through science that the accumulated blows taken by a boxer does WAY more damage than a huge flash knockout that appears much more impressive. That one big punch leaves one bruise and a level 1,2, or 3 concussion but it doesn't leave the entire side of the fighter's brain completely bruised like boxing. Look at old boxers...slurring their speech and having functional problems. Now look at the old veteran MMA fighters like Royce Gracie's father...still completely competent after fighting hundreds of fights and even fighting one complete fight with a broken arm. NO BRAIN DAMAGE. Granted, brain damage happens, but by no means should people believe that padded gloves is going to protect the fighters. The point of fighting is to get that KO...which in turn causes a concussion. They don't need more regulations.

MMA is not a sport. It is brute force and a perfect example of conduct which has been frowned upon in boxing."don't hit a man when he is down". MMA fans are sick!

I feel bad for his family. But, in every sport or anything we do for that matter, has risks. The fighters are well aware of the risks. I'm actually surprised to hear that this is the first death in MMA. So, MMa has one of the best track (if not the best) records in all sports? That's amazing !!!

Fast forward quickly through all of the chest beating rationalization pumped out by the non-participant voyeurs of this stuff. Bottom line - - it's not a sport and never will be. Deaths and physical disabilities arising from accumulated damage will be its inevitable legacy.

Why should we care if these guys want to beat each other to death? Remember, this is America. Supposed to be a free country, at least until George Bush took over. But that aside, I say let people do what they want to. They are not beating up unwilling participants. Who cares if they die? I certainly don't. The whole thing attracts a certain sort of people, just like titty bars and bowling. Not everybody wants to watch. But why should the government intervene if these guys knowingly and willingly participate. WHO CARES!!!????!!!!!!!!

Automobile driving has been ruled hazardous and will be outlawed immediately.
Sky Diving has been ruled dangerous and likewise is now banned.
Ditto motocycle riding, street crossing, shower curtain hanging, step navigating...
As for "more regulation" I recommend those big sumo suits, you moron.

There have been many mma fights and this is the first death in sanctioned bout. I feel sorry for his family and friends. But accidents do happen. People die playing football, Skate boarding, basketball, and swimming. Lets not for get all the injuries in cheerleading. Maybe we should stop all sports and driving cars. People choke on food, we should have all food chopped up to make it safer. No toys because the can be harmful too. He was a professional athlete, there are risks and he was willing to take them.
