If you thought coming back from knee surgery was hard enough, try doing it without taking any pain medication. That's hard core ... and also a bit nuts, which I guess is why I'm not surprised that
Gilbert Arenas is doing it. It certainly doesn't sound like much fun, though. He describes the first few days following his surgery in
his blog:
At 9 o'clock is when it kicked in full throttle and I was up until 6:00. I couldn't do nothing. Couldn't eat. Couldn't drink. I was just in agony throwing pillows and trying to readjust pillows. I walked the house at least five times on crutches trying to find somewhere that was comfortable.
I called the trainer at midnight and told him he better come over and massage my knee. That didn't help at all. Of course it didn't help.
He actually went on for several paragraphs describing the pain and how bad things got, but through it all he refused to take anything to make it go away. Why is exactly is he so dead-set against pain relievers?
1. I'm against pills in general. I think it's a coward's way to deal with pain. You take some pills, then the pills get you sleepy.
2. The main reason is though that it blocked my stomach up last time and I couldn't use the restroom. I couldn't use the restroom for like five days, and I didn't want to go through that pain again.
Ah, the truth comes out. By now I've learned never to be surprised when reading a Gilbert Arenas blog post (and it almost feels like a cop-out blogging about it), but that simply floored me. Take the pills with a Metamucil chaser, if that's what it takes, but man, take
something.
