Samari Rolle Says Official Called Him 'Boy'

Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle says he and teammate Bart Scott were infuriated during last night's loss to the Patriots when one of the game officials called Rolle "boy." Edward Lee of the Baltimore Sun reports:

"He did it five times," Rolle said of the official. "You don't call a grown man with a wife and three kids 'boy.' ... If he put on a helmet, he wouldn't say that to me."
Two things we should point out: The official in question, head linesman Phil McKinnely, is black, as are Scott and Rolle. And McKinnely actually played in the NFL for seven seasons, mostly as an offensive tackle with the Falcons, so McKinnely is one of the few NFL officials who might be willing to put on a helmet and say something to a player.

With that out of the way, the fact remains, officials need to address players respectfully, and not call grown men "boys." According to Rolle, the reason Scott got so enraged that he was flagged for two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties was that he heard McKinnely insult Rolle.

Rolle says he will discuss the issue with Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, and that he hopes the Ravens organization will take the matter up with the league.
