Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White has been fined $10,000 for flashing a T-shirt reading "Free Mike Vick" after a touchdown Monday night.
The $10,000 fine is fairly standard in the NFL for things like end zone celebrations that use props and unauthorized personal messages on uniforms, so White didn't get any extra punishment for the content of his message.
The message was flashed less than 12 hours after Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison for running the Bad Newz Kennels dog fighting ring. White's explanation for his shirt:
"That was homemade. I did that myself," White said. "It ain't too much to say, you know. The team misses him and we really need him this season. There ain't too much more to say about it."
If that was White's point, a "We Miss Mike Vick" message would have said that a little better, and would have avoided the implication that White thinks people who are rich and famous are above the law. Also, just wondering: Where were White's pleas from freedom when another football player in Georgia was in prison?

Can you wear signs on your clothes at your job Ann? I didn't think so. The NFL is a business. If White wants to picket the courthouse go ahead.

What a loser! This idiot does not get it. The fans make the NFL-without us we would just have a lot of athletic garbage men/ditch diggers/unemployment collectors wandering around. Don't cater to a man convicted of multiple felonies, cater to the people paying big bucks to cover your paycheck. I for one am happy the NFL is cracking down on their trash-without discipline, all teams would be like the Bengals and the NFL would be just like the NBA and MLB-hopeless and fading. Way to go, Roddy-welcome to the loser of the week club.
By the way Ann, the NFL can exclude any player they wish-they are not a free world and there is no right to free speech. It is a privilege to play in the NFL, not a right, and they can do what they want when they want to protect the league from morons like RW.

Just goes to show you the NFL is made up of a bunch of thugs and felons. How many have gone to jail or escaped going by the skin of their teeth. Having talent to play football is no big deal. If fans didn't pay their salaries they wouldn't be such big shots. How about fans going on strike and watch Goodell clean NFL up.

It is amazing how people think that a football game is sooooo important, that a confessed, convicted, animal abusing Federal felon should be released from prison so that he can play because "we need him". Need him for what? So you can put more money in your pocket to blow on strippers, spinners and bling?
Get a clue about the real world Roddy.

No surprise here. Birds of a feather.
Let's face it- A Masters degree in psychology is not required to play in the NFL.

I find it humorous how everyone (well, mostly everyone) that has commented here is so disgusted that a former teammate of Vick would show Vick some support at a time like this. You're all judging Vick based on what you read in the news. Yeah, yeah, what he did was pretty bad but Roddy and the other Falcons know Vick better than any of you will ever know him. They know the "real" Michael Vick, so it's definitely acceptable that they want to see him freed.
As for the "intellectuals" here, namely Mr.Master's in Psychology and Mr.Athletic Garbage, besides the ability to hide behind a computer and insult some of the most skilled and athletic men in the world, what other skills do you posses? I *highly* doubt that you're at the very top of whatever field you're in - which is what you have to be to play in the NFL, or any professional league at that - so don't try to take anything away from any of these players. Your comments are nothing less than cowardly.
One last thing, why are more people in this country more disgusted with Michael and the dog fighting incident than they are with a president that invaded a country under false pretenses; a war that has resulted in over 655 000 Iraqi deaths. I guess this is concrete proof that you believe that the life of a dog is worth more than that of an Iraqi .... or 655 000 at that.

Let's see, who do we have on here? A gal that talks like a sailor on leave and likes it up the ass, a fella that still thinks Bush stole the election from Gore and manages to inject his own private politics into every discussion, even those about sports, and another yahoo (pronounced yae-who) who thinks convicted felons are good for a professional sports league.
White doesn't have the right to free speech, or uniform accessories of his choice, or show-boating in his own behalf, when he's playing a game. That's because he's in his workplace, and the NFL and the Falcons are his employers, and as his employers they have the right to set reasonable standards of behavior. And, voicing your opinion that one of your co-workers, a self-admitted and convicted felon, was somehow wrongfully imprisoned by the justice system, falls short of most employers' views of reasonable behavior. If White and the other two teammates wanted to put forth an acceptable message, they probably could have come up with shirts and posters that read "We miss Mike Vick." But, as with most players of thier ilk, they act first and think later, and now they're a little lighter in the wallet for it. If I was king of the NFL, I'd have directed that all of the fines would go to the Humane Society or local animal shelter. And if White gave me any guff, I'd encourage him to work on expanding his newly formed clothing line, because I'd give him some extra unpaid time off with which to do it. As you were.

So if a friend is convicted of a crime you should turn your back on him, please. Roddy White is a better person then any of you ever will or know how to be, so they got their lil 10,000. Just because he is paid to entertain us doesn't mean he has to become the person you people are, which is a bunch of cowards who would act like you didn't know a friend just because you would make you look bad. A friend is a friend unconditionally, even when a friend is wrong you admit guilt and support a friend through a tough time, most of you don't have real friends anyway, because you are a bunch of kissasses. Or maybe theres a jealousy or a certain reason you enjoy seeing a man, a human being down, and the evil idea of them never amounting to nothing forever. Well face it he will once again be alright because he has what you all want, and thats real friends. So please get a life, everybody doesn't march at the same beat. Even god tells forgive, if not understand he has to pay for his guilt and he will, but he will always bounce back, damn haters. So sad. Only god can judge every man, black or white.

listen all these dudes was doin was supporting their friend. felon or not. if one of your family members ended up getting in trouble what are you going to do disown them? that man was like family to them regardless of what you all got to say about him and all they were doing was showing people that there are still people who care about him. and they get fined for it? the NFL is a joke!! their explanation was ünauthorized personal messages¨. OK fine clinton portis for lifting up his jersey in support of sean taylor and all the other athletes that write meesages about lost family members on their uniforms or shoes. NFL are the biggest hypocrites in the world!!!

I wonder if Vick had been jailed for child molestation instead of dog fighting, would they still be standing behind him? It just goes to show that his teammates have no regard for the suffering he inflicted. Let the dog fighter do his time. He got a much weaker sentence than many who've been busted before him. White can send him a card or something.

Wow you guys are taking this too far! Michael Vick was an exceptional quarterback and I’m sure his former teammates don’t condone his actions but I’m sure they have grown very close and just miss his presence. Give him a break already! His reputation is completely destroyed, he is no longer a Falcon, he's serving time and now his teammates are fined for showing a little compassion for him? People think the world of George Washington who had slaves but as an African American do I get upset every time I see quarter? I had a turtle growing up named Tom but do I protest restaurants who serve turtle soup? I happen to be a dog lover myself but my best friend is from Vietnam and was surprised when she came to America when she seen we have dogs for pets because her family couldn't afford chicken so they ate dogs. If a chinchilla was a common house pet in the U.S many wealthy people you look up to today would have "broken the law". This entire world is full of contradictions so just be happy with the players being fined and lets move on!
