New Season, Same Giants: New York Loses Critical Game Against Washington

The Todd Collins led Washington Redskins kept their playoff hopes alive last night with a 22-10 victory over the New York Giants at Giants Stadium. And although the chances of making it to NFL's second season remain slim, they 'Skins have put themselves in a much better position -- a position where they own a tiebreaker over the Giants.

Clinton Portis had a monster day, something many fans have been waiting for, with 126 yards on the ground and a score, while Ladell Betts added his first rushing touchdown of the season. And give credit to coach Joe Gibbs for sticking with the running game on such a windy night. It marked the first time this year were he really seemed to "get it."

Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the New York Giants, who decided to pass the balls 52 times. No, that's not a misprint; offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride really did call 52 pass plays in 20-30 mph winds. And Eli Manning suffered tremendously because of it, throwing 34 incompletions, which was the most since Joe Namath all the way back in 1967. Adding to the horror were all the dropped passes; something the Giants are becoming known for.

Sadly, the loss itself wasn't the worst of it for New York. Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey went down with a broken leg and is likely out for the season.

It's another year, but the same old Giants. As the season reaches a critical point, they become crippled with injury, subject to horrible play-calling, booing fans at home and mental mistakes (see Sinorice Moss running backwards) that are enough to give diehard fans a few strokes.

Can they back in this year or will they fully collapse and miss the playoffs all together? Tune in next week to find out (because they won't beat the Patriots in week 17)!
