The news that Mark Cuban is in talks with Floyd Mayweather about joining up with Cuban's mixed martial arts organization isn't particularly surprising: Cuban seems serious about making a splash in MMA, he and Mayweather are friends, and Mayweather has made noises before about wanting to give the sport a try.
But the question is this: Could Mayweather actually compete in MMA?
I think he could not just compete but thrive. As a fan of both sports, I have to say that I think Mayweather is a better all-around athlete -- in terms of his endurance, his agility, his quickness of hands and feet -- than anyone in mixed martial arts. Obviously, once an experienced fighter gets him on the ground he's in serious trouble, but getting a guy with Mayweather's athletic abilities on the ground is easier said than done.
Mayweather would probably take a year or more to train, and maybe fight a few stiffs, before he would step into the cage with a legitimate MMA fighter. But once he's done that training, I wouldn't bet against him.

I think with a year's training Mayweather could do well in MMA, but I don't see him beating Uriah Faber or Yamamoto. With a couple of years and some experience I think he'd have a good shot though.

FM may be a very good boxer and great athlete, but taking up another sport this late would be a mistake. Look at Jordan and Barkley at golf, and Too Tall Jones boxing. If Mayweather doesn't hurt them coming in, he is done. Faber would beat him now, 2 years from now or a decade from now. Stick to your sport and keep on ducking the guys below you and you will be rich and happy.

I don't know anything about MMA and i could care less about it, but Mayweather would get punished. He slipped and almost fell from a punch during the 1st round or 2 of the Hatton fight...imagine if Hatton would have been able to push him down and continue pummeling him...game over Floyd.
Actually, i would love to see that. I hope this comes true.

If he started at the bottom and worked his way up, sure, it's possible. For him to jump into MMA and win a title right off the bat, hell no!
The bigger question: why the hell would he want to take a massive pay cut and leave boxing?

floyd may have to train HARD with successful stand up fighters like rampage, iceman, gsp, and anderson "spider" silva if he wants to be an mma champ.

if mayweathwe turns mma..it will take about 90 seconds for him to retire. once these guys choke him out, put him in a submission hold, or kick one side of his face in...hw will know he made a HUGE career
mistake..and then find out he can't get SSI

I don't believe Mayweather would have any problem at all switching to MMA. Remember Boxing plays a major roll in Mixed Martial Arts. Floyd's hand skills alone gaurantee that his transition from Boxing to MMA will not be that difficult.
What I dont understand is some peoples perception that boxers only box. As a boxer and Martial Artist I can assure you that in the street where anything goes, boxers (who believe it or not get into street fights) do not jab jab cross. a Boxer street fighint knows very well that the fight ends up on the ground and most are adept at ground skills too. My vote is YES Mayweather will be great at MMA! If Butterbean has found reasonable success in MMA imagine Floyd!

I'VE FOUGHT IN AMATEUR BOXING AND I HAVE BEEN IN STREET FIGHTS. MMA VERSUS BOXING? WE'RE TALKING SERIOUS WHIP ASS HERE PRETTY BOY. TAKE YOUR LITTLE TOYS AND GO HOME. THIS IS A SPORT FOR MEN ONLY. NO BLACK REF IS GOING TO PULL YOU APART FROM YOUR OPPONENT TO KEEP HIM FROM KICKING YOUR ASS! BLACKS HAVE HAD SOME DEGREE OF SUCCESS BUT THE WHITE BOYS STILL KICK THEIR ASS REGULARLY IN THIS SPORT. IT IS LIKE TWO DAMN PIT BULLS LOCKING UP AND SOMEONE THROWING THE KEY AWAY. THE REF WILL NOT SAVE YOUR ASS. I HAVE BEEN IN STREET BRAWLS AND WHIPPED GUYS THAT COULD BEAT ME IN A SISSY BOXING MATCH BY RUNNING AWAY FROM ME ALL DAY AND ACCUMULATING HIT AND RUN JAB POINTS. BOXING IS FOR BOYS NOT REAL MEN. DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE GEORGE FOREMAN WOULD GET HIS ASS KICKED IN A STREET FIGHT IN HIS PRIME AGAINST SISSY ALI? IF YOU DO I CAN'T WAIT FOR YOUR COWARD ASS TO SIGN UP WITH REAL MEN IN THE MMA!

Mayweather would have a puncher's chance in any MMA fight, but that's about it. He's trained to box, he's used to punching and defending punches. He's not used to defending kicks, knees, elbows, or take downs. Any MMA fighter he didn't knock out quick would just leg kick him until they could get a take down. Once he was on his back, they would either ground and pound him or submit him. To the people who are mentioning street fights, street fighting and MMA fights are 2 different things, street fighters have no skills, they just hit with whatever they have. A street fighter has no defense, would never be able to pass a guard, or put someone in a submission. Mayweather should stick to boxing, although I would love to see BJ Penn or Joe Stevenson make him cry like a baby.

Dude,he will get dominated against a black belt in jiu jitsu. He will be taken down instantlly put on his back and either pounded or submitted.
He might land one punch as his oppenent shoots a single, but Floyd doesn't have one punch fight stopping power he is a counter puncher.I would love to see him freaking out on his back with a half ass open guard. I guarentee he will roll over in panic, give up his back and choked out in about 1:30.Write it down!!!!!!

He's a better athlete than anyone currently in MMA..PERIOD. Not even close. With training he has a shot to be world champ in 4 yrs. When MMA athletes can make 10-20 million a year/fight then we'll see the true athletes come out. Until then, they'll probably stick with boxing or football, etc. Lawrence Taylor or Ray Lewis would devastate the MMA in their prime with 4 years of training. With the current competition lives might be lost. Until the purses go waaay up world class athletes will choose other sports

Remember this guy knows how to train like a world class athlete and the connection and money to BE trained right off the bat by the worlds best. He needs half the time to attain skill necessary to compete. I've wrestled in minnesota and boxed amatuer and ring awareness does cross over. Only an idiot thinks he wouldn't have a shot. It doesn't take 10 years to learn the sport especially an athlete like this. And if violent athletes with the natural abilities and strength of NFL linebackers decide to forgo millions to train MMA a whole new class of fighters would emerge. Hughes, Liddell, Tito would get absolutely crushed.

Mayweather would get stomped, plain and simple. Any wrestler should be able to shoot on him then just pound him until he goes out.

The statement thay Mayweather is a better all around athlete than anyone in MMA is at least questionable. GSP anyone?
Also, Mayweather's althletic ability making him hard to take down at this point is quite silly. Anyone who trains judo or has a good shot would not have a problem taking down someone who has no training in that area.

IF CHUCK THE ICEMAN CAN BE A MMA HALL OF FAMER THEN FLOYD CAN BE A DOMINATE MMA FIGHTER AS WELL, ICEMAN IS ALL ABOUT STRIKING HE'S GOOD AT PREVENTING A TAKE DOWN BUT ONCE DOWN HAS LITTLE SKILL BUT YET HE'S A MMA HALL OF FAMER SO WITH 1 YEAR OF TRAINING IN BRAZILIAN JU JITSU I FEEL HE WOULD HAVE ENOUGH SKILL TO DO EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD IN MMA , BUT HE WONT GO UNDEFEATED LIKE IN BOXING CAUSE AT 155 THERE ARE GUYS LIKE, GUIDA / HUERTA/ PENN/ THAT MAY TAKE HIM OUT CAUSE THERE DOING THIS FOR 10 YEARS , I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM IN MMA IT WOULD BE GREAT FOR THE SPORT BUT NOT WITH MARK CUBAN BUT WITH DANA WHITE U.F.C

Ok, People
Lets tell it like it is!
First of all, Money May is a great athlete. However, he has no Muay Thai back ground nor any Jiu-Jitsu either. With that being said, yes he could learn how to stop a takedown just as Chuck did. But, no one can answer the question about the Muay Thai problem. Well, that problem can be solved by the people that he is around. If Money May goes with Cuban then you can be sure that he will get the training needed to be ready for an MMA fight. Cuban has the money and personal for this. I live in Dallas and know a lot of the people that are helping him with his MMA show. Money May would be able to train with guys from the Loin's Den Dallas and Muay Thai with Saekson one of the best Thai trainers in the world. So, with 18 months time his striking would be great. However, his ground game will always be his undoing.
Secondly, did any of you fools who think that Floyd could make it in the MMA world see the 24/7 stuff on HBO. Sorry about this but, those gloves in MMA are not big and thick like Boxing gloves. Even Money May addmitted that his hands were shit. If they are breaking up now then they will not last in an MMA match up.
Finally, for those of you who think that MMA does not pay enough or that Floyd should go with UFC. Boy you clowns don't know who you are dealing with. Mark Cuban has more than enough money to get Floyd on any of his cards and for a huge sum too. Trust me on that!!! What is even better is that he is willing to spend that kind of money too.

He's attempting to go into the MMA because, he knows, if he fights Cotto (after that), he'll use that as an excuse, that he got hurt over there(MMA)! COTTO is the only one thats "ever" been a real threat; not Delahoya, not Hatton. One was passed his prime & the other hasn't reached his. Or, HE'LL TAKE A LONG VACATION, GET BEAT AND SAY IT WAS "RING RUST";that he took to much time off. It's obvious that he's afraid of Cotto, thats why he n(ever) mentions him. He's "GOT TO" FIGHT HIM OR HE'LL N(EVER) BE CONSIDERED THE BEST; OR EVEN A REAL CHAMPION. P.S. AND,I'm the biggest Myweather fan there is; believe it or not!

I think he should "TRY" to defeat Cotto first (HE'S THE ONLY ONE THAT FLOYD HAS ALWAYS BEEN AFRAID OF; THAT'S WHY HE N(EVER)MENTIONS HIM.) So that he doesn't come back later on and say, "I got hurt when I was trying out the MMA! OR, "That year I took off really hurt me." He "KNOWS, He canNOT beat Cotto." HE'LL N(EVER) BE A REAL CHAMPION UNTIL HE BEATS THE ONLY PERSON WHO'S EVER BEEN A REAL THREAT!

Ok, Cotto is a bad ass yes!!! I would take bet on him in almost any fight. However, a match up between him and Floyd would look a lot like Taylor vs. Chavez did. The only difference is that the black guy won't kick his has kicked in the final round. Floyd's hands are just to quick for Cotto.
Also, Floyd has not been ducking him. It all has to do with management. The fighters want to fight but, the management make it a pain to make the fight.
