Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan has only a very slightly better chance of being a first-day NFL draft pick than I do.After a 41-10 loss in the Sugar Bowl in which Brennan faced Georgia, his first high-quality defensive opponent, there's just no way NFL scouts are going to spend a first- or second-round pick on Brennan. He looked incapable of recognizing blitzes or completing passes over linebackers.
The questions about Brennan -- whether the June Jones Hawaii offense has prepared him for the NFL, whether his mechanics need work, whether his arm is strong enough -- have been around a long time. But those questions were never all put on display, for an audience that included dozens of NFL scouts, the way they were last night.
Brennan's production in college was sufficient to make some team take a chance on him as a long-term project, but they'll only do that with a second-day pick. Brennan is a long, long way from being able to play on Sundays.

I agree with you it is unlikely Hawaii Quarterback Colt Brennan will go on the first day after the 41-10 loss he suffered in the Sugar Bowl.
However this statement: "He looked incapable of recognizing blitzes or completing passes over linebackers."
Is terribly flawed and mistaken.
Recognizing blitzes? Watch the game again, Georgia hardly ever blitzed, in fact often dropped back eight men in coverage. The real reason why he was sacked so often, his Offensive Tackles were just blatantly out-athleted. Don't ask Brennan though, for he has always been a team guy and never has cast the blame on his teammates when this time, there really wasn't much he could do. You think of some pros like Peyton Manning, and you know Peyton would have blamed his O-line.
Although Brennan definitely did not play like a pro, in what pro situation is he ever going to be under duress as often as he was as well as sacked as many times as he was. Lets face it, he had a bad game. However, I do not think this performance at all represents his overall ability.

Tom Brady was a 6th round draft pick and look at
where he is today. joe montana was a third round draft pick coming out of notre dame as a starting
qb and look at what he accomplished. Bill walsh
saw something "special" in joe and took a chance
with him. the same goes for colt brennan. people
call him a system qb but his accuracy in throwing
the football is unbelievable. football is a "team"
sport. if your offensive line doesn't protect you how can you perform. everyone did not play their
best game and shouldn't fault colt for that. i truly
believe no matter what round in the draft colt goes
he is going to become another joe montana or tom
brady. although the pain of losing in the sugar
bowl will follow colt for a while this experience
and many more challenges will be the building block towards his future in the nfl.

Smith, as previously stated, you need to watch that game again. I'm sure your rationality is based primarily off other analysts and highlights. Hawaii's offensive line could not compare to the speed of Georgia's defensive line. 2 of his interceptions thrown were due to the recievers running the wrong routes and the other was a deflection that a 5-year old boy could have caught.
Brennan's accuracy is inevitable through his stats. The "system" he plays in only makes it that much more difficult to maintain such a consistent accuracy and quarterback rating. When you're passing 15 or so more times a game than most quarterbacks, it's obvious you are going to have more interceptions. Yet with that said, Colt still manages to obtain one of the best passer ratings in the nation.
I understand that his draft stock will not compare to soome of the other quarterbacks in the league, but until his combine scores are released, I feel that it is too soon to make any irrational and uneducated statements about his talent.

i do agree with you that that loss in the sugar bowl made his chances of being a first day pick drop tremindiousaly, but you also have to look at what he has done in his 3 years at hawaii. 131 passing td's, 14193 carrer passing yards. and even though he does play in the wac, there is no one that you can put in his situation and for them to do what he has done. i just cain't see why that a team like the falcons or the dolphins wouldn't atleast give this guy a try.

I don't think the Sugar Bowl had a huge impact on his perceived talent - put an NFL caliber line in front of him and we'll see - but I think he took a serious hit in judging his emotional maturity.
He already had serious 'social' question marks coming in after his problems in Colorado, and watching him practically in tears on the sideline during a nationally televised game, I couldn't help but think that this kid might have some real issues. I've seen players get upset about ass whoopings - Juice Williams in the Rose Bowl, for example - but this looked a lot different. I doubt I'm alone in seeing this, but hey, I don't know him personally.

I don't see anything wrong with Colt's reaction. He passed up going in the first round of the draft last year with hopes of leading Hawaii to an undefeated season. When it became clear that they couldn't win the Sugar Bowl and that he wouldn't be returning to the game, he felt like he had let his team, his coach, his school and probably the whole state down. This game had much more severe implications for Colt Brennan than for Juice Williams or anyone else and he was probably crushed.

Colt's line is to blame for his performance. I disagree that you can look at his emotional reaction as a reflection of his character. thats a load of horse. open up an article about the guy and read about what he has done with his life following colorado. He's essentailly in the same position as brady quinn was, 3rd in heisman voting, loss in the sugar bowl to the SEC by at least 25 points and around 150 passing yards and 2 interceptions. Quinn still went first round.

Look, what hurt Colt Brennan's chances is the fact that NFL scouts and coaches got to see him and didn't like what they saw. His arm strength has been called into question as the scouts became worried that he couldn't throw the out routes.

Yeah, I disagree that you even come close to being as good as colt but good way to get your point across by being drafted. But I dont think we watched the same sugar bowl. Hawaii's O line was being demolished, they could put any quarterback in that situation and see if they get 169 yards. I seriously doubt it. Georgia could put 4 in the box and drop everyone else back. He was set up for failure. But I agree he will move back in the draft, someone will get lucky. He just has to master under the center like he did the run and shoot. Also get a little bigger and stronger. He has the elusiveness, smarts and accuracy.

I think Colt Brennan can go in the 1st round. Just look at the impact he had on Hawaii's football program. Plus, look at all the records he set.
