Jaguars Have Tons of Cap Room to Play With

They didn't have quite enough weapons to beat the Colts or the Patriots this season -- who does? -- but the Jacksonville Jaguars showed marked improvement from a mediocre 2006 and don't really have a whole lot of weaknesses, save for their continued lack of consistency at receiver. (Admit it, Jaguars fans -- Matt Jones and Dennis Northcutt don't fill you with a whole lot of confidence, do they?)

As it turns out, they won't have any trouble addressing the weaknesses they have. CBS reported this morning that the Jaguars are expected to be $32.3 million under the NFL salary cap at the start of the free agency period. The only team that has more space is the Tennessee Titans, who spent nothing last spring and still found their way to the playoffs.

That means Jacksonville and Tennessee could be competing for receivers during the next free agency period, and David Garrard's improved play at quarterback could make the Jags a more appealing destination for guys like Bernard Berrian and Bryant Johnson. The Jags might even wheel and deal a bit to get the players they need this offseason.

That loss in New England last night may have hurt a little, but these Jaguars moved in the right direction in 2007 and could be even better in 2008.
