If you're an Auburn fan looking to own a piece of your team's "legacy", you might want to check out eBay. Jason Campbell's ring from the 2004, 13-0 campaign.Currently the auction has a $6,500 "buy it now" price, but has received almost a dozen other offers.
I'm not sure what's more interesting, that Campbell, a starting quarterback in the NFL, needed to sell his ring or that the ring is emblazoned with the words "NATIONAL CHAMPIONS". The seller must be getting some flack for that (I'm not sure why... after all, they were the "people's champions") as he says in his write up "I will not answer any questions regarding the 2004 'National Championship'. . . . So please spare me the questions and/or comments about USC, who the true champion is, this ring is a fraud, etc."

They may not have won the national title, but they're the only team to go undefeated in the SEC since UT in 98, something that Florida and LSU can't claim.

It's a curious story, to be sure. I can't imagine a soon-to-be multi-millionaire 1st round draft pick putting his championship ring up for auction. Heck, I've still got a couple of Birmingham Bulls hockey pucks from the 1970s, and I just went to the games...
I can only speculate that it's either some elaborate fraud, or Campbell's upset that Al Borges got the hook.
In summary, its a big "whatever." If it's really Campbell's ring, he's got the right to do that. After all, we don't recognize posthumous, pseudo-national championships at Auburn.

Mm. 1957. AP. That IS good enough. We also appreciate SEC crowns, since those are won on the field. Since Bear Bryant retired, Auburn has 5, Bama has 3. As to other SEC teams, Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss have none. Georgia has 2, Tennessee has 5, LSU has 5, and Florida has 7. Gators rule, but Auburn's in some pretty good company!

Did anyone notice the words "Salesman Sample Ring," on the letter of authenticity? It's not Campbell's, just a prototype made by Balfour.

Pete would never point that out. He looks for negatives about Auburn and when he can't find it, he spins the story to his liking.

Where's Pete to issue his mea culpa? As Editor-in-Part of the Auburn Fanhouse, he should really be concerned about accuracy. This apology-less post still isn't as egregious to Auburn fans as his "Losing to Croom" video, but it's close.
For the record, Auburn received three national championship selectors choosing them in 2004, out of almost 40 out there. Obviously, USC got the most, and got the only two that count.
Does the university officially claim 2004 as a NC? No, they don't. Will we accept a selector's award, no matter how insignificant they are? Yes. Will we acknowledge in some small way to those kids who played their heart out that they were someone's national champion? I think so.
Just compare that to the university of Alabama's method of determining NCs. Just one example, in 1941. The Tide finished with 2 losses and ranked 20th in the final AP poll. Yet, one selector out of 39 chose Alabama as NC. So, Bama waits a few years when no one is watching, then proudly hoists up the title banner. One of the five illegitimate titles they boast.
But in 1994, one selector again chose Alabama as NC. Why hasn't Alabama claimed it, or are they still in their waiting period? Chances are, they know they can't get away with it anymore...
Pete: Dispute any of that?

I'd welcome comments either way, James.
I still want Pete to authorize Auburn folks to put up the occasional hack piece on the Bama Fanhouse like he does to ours...

im not on here about campbells ring. im on here because i heard a report today that neither espn nor the bloggers have reported on. today i heard on radio that reggie bush asked in his deposition (hope thats correct spelling) for his upcoming trial that anything that involves the ncaa not be released. 1st im not sure that is possible since all public trial records are open for the public. 2nd if reggie bush was accepting money while at usc then the ncaa needs to remove the crystal ball from heritage hall and hand it to auburn university. in my opinion usc can keep the wins and ap award but the bcs (coaches poll) needs to do to usc what it did to oklahoma in 1974 when 11-0 ou split with 10-1-1 usc. the only difference the player involved for ou (kerry jackson 1972) wasnt on the 74 team while bush was on usc 2004 team. as an ou fan i cant make an arguement that ou deserved the title because the players chose to embarass themselves instead of taking care of business so it should go to auburn. im hoping the bloggers will have something on this story soon. just a few facts for you.
