Rich Rodriguez Shreds WVU... Literally

We've all been through them: those breakups which finally reached the point of no return. Sure, maybe there were stages leading up to the finale, but there came a moment when you knew with crystalline clarity that you'd never get back together again.

It's safe to say that West Virginia and Rich Rodriguez have reached that point in their relationship. We say this with confidence not because of the nasty public dispute and pending lawsuits between "Coach Rod" and his alma mater, but because he got the paper shredder involved. It has come to light that Rich Rodriguez eliminated most of the records he kept -- including seven years' worth of player records -- in Morgantown before departing to take the head coaching gig at Michigan.

From the Charleston Gazette:

"It's unbelievable. Everything is gone, like it never existed,'' said a source within the athletic department, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "Good, bad or indifferent, we don't have a record of anything that has happened.''

According to the source, the files in Rodriguez's office that are now missing included everything from records regarding summer camps - financial and otherwise - to data on boosters, recruiting and most everything related to activities within the program during Rodriguez's seven years at WVU.

According to multiple sources, several people in the Puskar Center reported seeing Rodriguez and at least one member of his inner circle, video coordinator Dusty Rutledge, in Rodriguez's private office shredding paperwork on Dec. 18. That's the day he returned to clean out his office after being introduced as the Michigan coach at a press conference in Ann Arbor the day before.
You can imagine the reaction of West Virginia bloggers.

WestbygodVirginia.net writes:
To be perfectly honest with you, not even I thought Rodriguez had this in him. Going beyond the initial "WTF" reaction, he's probably broken any number of state laws. I have half-a-mind to try to get him indicted on war crimes, but that Geneva Convention is always a crapshoot.
And WV Mountaineer Sports says "Dick Fraud" broke a basic tenet of human morality:
We've all been fired or quit a job, and we all know that you have to leave the red stapler!
Our own John Radcliff, a WVU alum, says Michigan better start backing up their data now. I'll take it a step further and recommend nightly remote backup.
