Granted, it's only for the opening series in Japan (and the A's are doing it, too) but once you go down that slippery slope ... The Biz of Baseball pointed me in the direction of this article from the Boston Herald:Red Sox players will sport EMC logos on their sleeves during the team's season opening series in Japan, the first time the storied franchise has turned its uniforms into potential ad space.Six figures for one series? I know it's a special circumstance, but if they can draw that kind of dough, why wouldn't baseball owners eventually adopt this on a full-time basis? In an unrelated article, Red Sox owner John Henry said yesterday that his team has pretty much maximized their current revenue streams -- don't you think he'd welcome something like this over a full summer?
EMC Corp. is betting the deal will help accelerate its drive into the lucrative Japanese tech market. The Pacific region represents the fastest growth area for the Hopkinton-based data storage giant, said David Farmer, director of corporate communications.
The deal, which is with MLB Japan, is likely to cost EMC in the six figures, one leading sports business expert said.
I know a lot of "purists" will cringe at the idea, but those same purists eventually got used to night games, advertisements on the outfield walls, extended breaks between innings for commercials, the designated hitter -- hell, even integration. All of those ideas make perfect sense now but were frowned upon once upon a time.
And considering just about every professional sports league outside of the U.S. has adopted advertisements on uniforms, there's no reason to think this won't happen sooner or later. Think of it as an added incentive for teams to get better: the better the record, the more TV exposure a team gets (both games and highlights) and the more they can charge for uniform space. It works for NASCAR, doesn't it? Brands would jump at the chance to be associated with individual teams.

I don't want baseball uniforms covered in ads, ending up looking like NASCAR drivers firesuits.

I don't get why everyone is making a big deal about this. Whenever 2 MLB teams play in Japan, they usually have patches and corporate logos on their uniforms and helmets. It's a fact of life. Ads are huge in Japan, and companies pay the MLB teams to put ads on their uniforms.
They even did it with the Mets and Yankees a few years ago! Yankees jerseys are way more historic than the Red Sox, and I don't remember there being a big to do when that happened. This isn't news, people.....
Here are some pics, for those who don't remember:

I don't see the Yankees resorting to anything like this. I think there is a lot bigger fan base with the Yankees than Red Sox. I used to live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There are a lot of Yankee caps there. There's very few Red Sox baseball caps. In Miami, there are a lot of former New Yorkers. There are way more Yankee fans than even Marlins fans here. There's also more Mets fans that Marlins fans. The same thing goes for Tampa and St. Petersburg. There's more Yankee fans than Devil Ray fans there. Something tells me that the Red Sox won't be able to afford Johan Santana since they've gone to this extreme.

If baseball stadiums were once covered with ads, and if ESPN can televise baseball with ads that can only bee seen on television to enhance their revenue, and when AROD gets a 700+ million dollar contract, why can't the baseball owners make money any way that they can sell their product. Baseball is aproduct that must be creatively sold so that owners can pay players salaries and so players can buy steroids to keep earning outrageous salaries ...simply fo rplaying a kid's game ( and cheating everyone else while doing it!)

Uhh, Ralph, check some of those links in Rick's comment. The Yankees DID resort to this when they played the D'Rays in Japan. It's how MLB helps to offset the cost of playing overseas.

They are selling the naming rights of the stadiums to corporate America. The next move will be to rename the teams. Won't it be great when we see the AT&T Red Sox of Boston, or the Budweiser Cardinals of St. Louis?

I think that's a super idea. The revenue drawn in by that should help reduce the the over-payed players salaries or just take the Add income and donate it to some well deserving charities. Possibily use it for rehab centers for the professional players drug and other illegal substances. "Maybe the CLEAR house." Maybe you could then Canseco too oversee that all testing is accurate!

I can hear the interview now: "Well, Brent first off I'd like to say we at the Viagra, Louisville Slugger, Cialis, Nike, Pop Tarts, Underarmor, Rawlings, Tampex team would like to thank everybody for making this possible."
I could accept a little Charity log like the Dana-Farber Institute or March of Dimes. I have suffered through strikes, steriods and the commercialization of baseball, but if the day comes when a baseball player looks like a Nascar driver, I will finally have found a reason to not watch baseball.

Come on with the comparisions to nascar. I understand that Red Sox owner is part owner of a team but stop. I think that this is the most rediculous thing in the world and I am embarassed that the Yanks stooped to this level a few years back. Corprate America stick with Nascar where you have helped the sport grow to what it is today and stay out of baseball, football and any other sport that you want to get your greedy hands in and give it back to the communities. The only patches that should be worn on MLB players uniforms should be for the late greats and charities. Stop trying to ruin my sports!

Hey Ralph,
The reason you see Yankees crap in places like Albuquerque, Miami, Tampa, etc. is due to the large quantity of thugs and gangsta-wannbes in those locales. The Yankees are the Raiders of baseball. Go Sox!

I can't see this ever happening with MLB or the NBA OR NFL for that matter. Wouldn't this violate player contracts with other endorsements that they already have? Ex. Derek Jeter and Nike...Im sure under contract he can not wear another companies cleats for example let alone a large patch from Reebok on his sleeve...Yanks in 08'!!!!

As to the comment that the teams should donate the added revenue to charity or reduce prices for their fans...like THAT's gonna happen.
I hear Chico's Bail Bonds is looking for some team to sponsor. Seriously, is this any way for a professional sports industry to act? Maybe they should stop paying such outrageous salaries.
Like THAT's gonna happen.
