The Redskins Front Office Has No Idea What Hiring a Head Coach Is All About

Um, yeah, Joe Gibbs has been gone for three weeks and team owner Dan Snyder, along with recently promoted Vice President of Football Operations, Vinny Cerrato, have already mucked things up. Conventional wisdom had assistant coach-defense Gregg Williams succeeding Gibbs as Washington's head coach, but he looks to be a long shot at this point..

And while Williams isn't necessarily the best guy for the job, the way the Redskins' front office has conducted the search is, well, typical ... but that's kinda the problem. Anyway, the latest has Snyder and the Yes Man trying to hire Jim Fassel for the head job (fans are psyched, by the way), Rex Ryan as the defensive coordinator and Jim Zorn as the offensive coordinator.

The problem, though, is that Ryan isn't interested in making a lateral move (he currently has the same title in Baltimore) and the Seahawks want to keep Zorn on staff and possibly promote him to offensive coordinator when Mike Holmgren retires after the 2008 season.

Now there's no guarantee Fassel gets the job, and in fact, the Washington Post's Jason La Canfora writes that the coaching search could go on until after the Super Bowl:
Gregg Williams remains on the back burner, sitting there, but people close to him don't expect him to be offered the job, and, after the way this thing has gone down, they're not sure Williams would even take it if offered. Jacksonville would love to hire him for its Defensive Coordinator opening, league sources said.
I'm sure fans of the the other three NFC East teams are ecstatic about Cerrato's increased role in personnel decisions. I can't imagine this ending badly.
