When a Sacramento columnist used an anonymous busboy who caught
Don Nelson eating at
Chris Webber's restaurant to infer Webber would soon be a Warrior,
I thought it was a joke. But you know, Martin McNeal might have scooped the world, because the
Contra Costa Times has
a screaming story confirming talks between C-Webb and Golden State.
Two team officials confirmed that the Warriors are in discussions with Webber, who played his rookie season with the Warriors in 1993-94. There is some belief the two parties are close to an agreement.
A different source confirmed that Webber and Warriors coach Don Nelson, who separated on bad terms in 1994, have talked in an attempt to put the past behind them. Warriors executive vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin has said a big man is on his wish list.
As I said earlier this week, it's a nice story... but it's not likely to help in real terms on the court. Golden State needs to improve its defense; Detroit's defense last year was 2.6 points per 48 minutes
worse when Webber was in. It's not a disastrous move -- Webber's probably the best veteran big available, and his passing would be an excellent fit in the grand scheme. But I don't understand why Nelson is unwilling to try solutions from within, especially with youngsters
Patrick O'Bryant and
Brandan Wright languished on the pine. They'd help the rebounding and defense loads more than Webber ever could.

1. POB and BWright are going to be great. But their game's are no where near CWebb's at this point. Webber's got the experience, composure and refinement that neither of the two young bigs have yet.

2. Nelson has something against rookies. If he was coach three years ago Monta Ellis would not have plyed and he is now the best player on the team better then Baron. Nelson is not a complete coach. Only knows offense.

4. All that he wants Webber for is to run a high post Vlade type of passing game. With Webber, all he has to do is be himself and not screw up in trying to take over games.
Pat has been a stiff so far and starts fouling not too long after taking the floor. Brandan is not a 6'10" passer. It's just science, really :)

5. I am not sold on the fit for Webber in Golden State. They have a high powered, run-and-gun offense that does not require additional firepower. Webber could not play run-and-gun ball; GS needs another big man but Webber does not make them any more of a championship contender. He's not the missing piece to their puzzle unless he plays like he was 22 again. I think Webber's passing ability may be marginally beneficial but it's more likely that he will just be playing pick and roll bball with baron and stephen jackson, and stepping out for that 15-foot J. Either way, it's gonna be entertaining
