After a winter full of rumors, Geoff Baker at the Seattle Times is reporting that the
Erik Bedard to the Mariners trade is
finally coming to fruition. The M's have called
Adam Jones back to the states in the middle of the Venezuelan Winter League finals for a physical in Baltimore and according to Jones himself, Mariner's GM Bill Bavasi told him the deal was done. From the Times' baseball blog (linked above):
"(Bill Bavasi) called me yesterday and told me the news. I've got to go to Baltimore tomorrow morning and handle things there. I'm the centerpiece of the deal on the Mariners side. It's an honor to get traded for such a highly talented pitcher as Bedard is. He's one of the best. Last year he finished up as arguably one of the top candidates for the Cy Young. He's that good, so for me it's an honor. You know, I like Seattle, but if I am in Baltimore, as I think now I am, I'm going to embrace it and have the best time of my life in Major League Baseball."
No one's really sure who the other players involved from the Seattle side are going to be, but Baker is expecting a press conference announcing the trade by Tuesday. I'm not sure this move pushes the Mariners past the Angels in the AL West, but Bedard and
Felix Hernandez would make as good of a 1-2 punch as there is in the league (unless the Red Sox get
Johan Santana) and will probably make them serious contenders in both the West and for the Wild Card.

Being a Red Sox fan it's a welcome relief to see Bedard go out West! The only place better would be the National League!

As a long-time O's fan, it's really sad to see the team in such a sorry state. The way the O's dealt with Bedard reminds me of how they treated their last really good pitcher, Mike Mussina, who got fed up with being run down and took the first train out of town. The M's are in for a treat with a primo pitcher while the O's are doomed to last place in the AL East, and there they will remain until their owner, the Peter (Angelos)gets tired of screwing the fans and sells the team.

Peter has done nothing but ruin one of the best franchises in all of sports.Let Cal take over the team. The man clearly knows the game, unlike most of these investors/owners.

Who is now on the Orioles? What, they're using their minor league team from Bowie to take over all the positions? Or how about all the kids from the Cal Ripken leagues up here in Maine. I'm sure they'd be excited to play on a team that has no motivation to get better. Thank you Angelos, I always knew you were a Yankee fan.
