Will the Patriots Be Able to Re-sign Moss?

Some five months ago this seemed like a ridiculous notion: the Patriots might have trouble re-signing Randy Moss. There was even speculation that he would be released during the preseason.

Yeah, that didn't happened. In fact, Moss set the single-season touchdown reception record and is now in line for a humongous payday. He's contract expires in a few weeks and while he would obviously be the most desirable wide receiver free agent on the market, most people just assume New England will re-sign him.

Maybe not. Moss took a Foxboro discount to get out of Oakland and there's reason to think he'll want to be compensated for his 2007 season.
[Moss is so] important that he might be impossible to sign to a new contract. The Patriots do not give their players record-setting deals. Brady, for instance, is not the highest-paid quarterback in the league....

The Patriots can't treat Moss any differently than they've treated their other players without sabotaging the team-first philosophy that has allowed them to go to four Super Bowls in seven years.

And Moss might not be willing to play for less than top dollar. One agent said if he represented Moss, he would ask for considerably more than the best-paid receiver in the NFL is getting.
Somehow I see this working out. And you know what? Even if it doesn't, I'm guessing the Patriots will manage (assuming they don't just franchise Moss). I mean, they were one absurdly awful half of football from going to last year's Super Bowl with Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney as the team's best receivers.

As for Moss, wherever he lands, he'll surely get paid. The only question -- and it's a big one -- is if he'll be the 2007 version, or the 2005-06 model that half-assed it through two seasons in Oakland.
