Burress Scored the Game-Winner, but Tyree Was the Giants Best Receiver This Night

And that, as they say, is that. I'm pretty sure that outside of Frank Caliendo and Dan Benton, the lone FanHouse Giants fan, not many people gave New York a chance tonight. I know I had my doubts.

Luckily, nobody cares what I think. Wide recever Plaxico Burress pointed it out this morning, but during the regular season the Giants lost to the Cowboys, Packers and Patriots. They beat Dallas and Green Bay in the playoffs to get to the Super Bowl. And then they beat New England. Didn't see that coming.

Anyway, Burress, who was silent for most of the game, hauled in the game-winning touchdown with just 59 second on the clock. But it never would've come to that if not for two of his teammates: Eli Manning and David Tyree.

With 75 seconds on the clock and the Giants facing a third-and-5 from their own 44, Manning, suddenly channeling Michael Vick without the urge to kill dogs, escaped what looked to be a certain sack, heaved what looked to be a certain interception some 30 yards down the field, only to have Tyree make quite possibly the greatest catch in Super Bowl history.

Yeah, that's right, the greatest. Sure, Lynn Swann made that acrobatic grab while kneeing a Cowboys defender, but it wasn't an end-of-game, do-or-die situation for the Steelers.

I mentioned it earlier, but there's always a guy who comes out of nowhere to put up huge numbers on the game's biggest stage. A lot of us thought that dude would be Wes Welker. Instead, it turned out to be Tyree, who, in addition to The Catch that set up The Touchdown, also hauled in a touchdown of his own earlier in the half. Not bad for a guy who didn't have a single TD grab during the regular season.
