The Word:

Jerry Jones Ain't Trading Up for Darren McFadden, Morning News Writer Disagrees

Earlier this week there were rumors that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might entertain thoughts of trading the team's two first-round picks for the opportunity to draft Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. Just about everybody thought it was a dumb idea, and apparently, that includes Jones too.
When asked about the possibility of a deal involving Barber and draft picks for the chance to draft the Arkansas running back, Jones told a respected Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist, "No. Let me be very clear - no. I read (the rumor) and laughed. Marion at running back, we feel, is one of our strengths, and we want to keep it that way."
Sounds good to me, but the Dallas Morning News' Nick Eatman disagrees:
I'm sorry, but the Cowboys aren't doing their job if they simply rule the whole thing out. Just like the Dolphins aren't doing their job if they don't explore every opportunity to get better. And when you go 1-15, you need much more than just one really good football player.

If you go 13-3, have 13 Pro Bowlers but still need something to get over that hump, maybe a really good football player with the potential to be great is exactly what you need.
Look, on the surface, this is a ridiculous idea, but I take Eatman's point: it doesn't hurt to listen to offers. That said, Marion Barber isn't the reason the Cowboys lost to the Giants in the playoffs. They could've had Adrian Peterson and McFadden in the backfield that day and they still would've come up short.

And thinking long-term, is it a good idea to mortgage the future on the chance that McFadden has a significantly better career than Barber, especially since it seems that some NFL teams aren't all that jazzed about McFadden's prospects at the next level?
