Satire sometimes gets passed around as fact on the internet and gets a life of its own.After New England lost the Super Bowl, the internets were jubilant that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's supermodel girlfriend, Gisele Bundchen lost an embarrassing bet. Reports circulated that Bundchen promised to run through midtown Manhattan naked if the Patriots lost the Super Bowl.
Or that she backtracked on her promise due to logistical reasons, and suggested that she would flash her breasts on a jumbotron in Times Square instead.
Hmmm, when I first heard the story, it seemed like something that is more a male fantasy than something a semi-rational female would ever ever say. Turns out I was right.
The satire site, The Sportsman's Daily, wrote a fake news story about the Bundchen promise (warning semi- NSFW picture) that was republished as a special to CBSSports.com.
It had a disclaimer on the bottom of the article saying "For more satirical stories like this, check out The Sportsman's Daily homepage."
The satire was lost by others on the interwebs, and they republished the promise as a CBSSports.com real news story and as an excuse to run galleries of lots of Bundchen bikini pictures. Someone told me that they even heard it on SportsCenter.
I can see why. If you look on the front page of the SPiN on Sports, Sportsline.com, it still reads in big letters, "Bundchen: 'If the Pats Lose, I'll Run Naked Through Manhattan' Winning isn't everything, if losing means you get to glimpse the supermodel nude."
Mostly people wouldn't know by glancing at that Sportsline.com headline that this is a completely made up satire story.
Bundchen finally heard about this naked bet, and had a statement issued by her agent to People.com, "She didn't say it. It is ridiculous. What's wrong with the world?"
Some people still don't believe this denial, but do want to run more Bundchen bikini pictures.

Seriously,I think you should stay on this story SS, it's important.

SHe is not attractive at all bod is ok alittle to tall looks kind of freaky.Would love to see Tom run naked though,he is a pretty boy hubba hubba. She was the less attractive of all the Victoria models her extra long leggs got the attention thats it.

I'm the er uh "broad" who wrote this story. The only reason it was written is that legitimate news sources thought that the original nekkid Gisele promise was real. And that this spread so far on the internet, that Gisele's manager had to deny it.
All I did was explain how some internet satire turned into something that people thought was real. The anatomy of an internet rumor.
By the way, I have no interest in being a journalist--I'm a blogger. Sportswriters work too hard for usually too little pay and don't have nearly as much fun as I do. :)
