Adrian Peterson's Sights Set on 2,000 Yards

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson had a rookie year that exceeded expectations. He set the all-time record for rushing yards in a game, he won the rookie of the year award, and he'll play in tomorrow's Pro Bowl.

But Peterson says he's going to be better in 2008. A lot better. According to Mike McAllister of ESPN.com, Peterson thinks he's going to have a 2,000-yard season in 2008.

"Oh, yeah, I set my bar high," he said this week, one of just four rookies (Patrick Willis, Joe Thomas and Nick Folk are the others) appearing in the Pro Bowl. "That's definitely where I'd like to start."

It's a fine goal for Peterson to have, but it's not realistic for fans to expect Peterson to rush for 2,000 yards this year. Peterson came up well short of 2,000 in 2007, rushing for 1,341 yards as a rookie, and even if he's healthier and therefore gets more carries this year, as long as Chester Taylor is still a Viking, Peterson isn't going to carry much more than 300 times in a season, which means 2,000 yards is almost certainly out of reach. Still, give the guy credit for setting lofty goals.
