Oakland Raiders Re-Sign Justin Fargas

The Raiders and running back Justin Fargas have agreed on a contract extension, the team announced on its web site.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports (via PFT) that it's a three-year, $12 million deal with $6 million in guaranteed money. The deal will keep the 28-year-old Fargas in Oakland through the 2010 season. He had been scheduled to become a free agent on February 29.

Although a $6 million guarantee is certainly not bad money, I'm surprised Fargas didn't test the waters of free agency. I would think a guy who's still in his 20s and coming off career highs in carries (222), yards (1,009), touchdowns (four), receptions (23) and receiving yards (188) would want to see how much he could command on the open market.

Fargas, the Raiders' third-round pick out of USC in 2003, will compete for the starting running back position with LaMont Jordan, Michael Bush and Dominic Rhodes in 2008. (UPDATE: There's a good chance that Jordan, Rhodes, or both will get cut.)
