Show of hands. Who here believes that baseball was free of performance enhancing drugs? Nobody.I am fine with baseball spending its own money getting the Mitchell Commission to investigate PEDs in baseball. What I'm not terribly happy with is Congress spending my money looking into it, especially a swearing match between two individuals who nobody completely believes.
Actually, it makes me Lewis Black angry.
During the hearing, Rep Bruce Braley among others kept on reminding us that this is all about the children. For the children????? (Insert profanity here of your favorite sort). How about not saddling our children with a debt so large that the made up word ginormous is still too small sounding to describe it?
Here's a US National Debt clock website. It claims that as of the moment that I'm writing this, the US National Debt is $9,253,534.982,739.89. Here's a news report that says the President just recently submitted a budget for $3.1 trillion dollars.
With numbers like those, no wonder Congress, with few exceptions, has no problem spending money having staffers track down details about Roger Clemens' butt abscess or the Jose Canseco's party attendees.
The more I watched, the angrier I got. I can't fathom the amounts of money spent preparing for this hearing, much less the amount of money that will likely be spent investigating prosecuting Clemens for the inevitable perjury trail.
Congress seems to have no understanding of the dollar, and no understanding that spending thousands here, there, and everywhere is not helping kids out one lick. Do they even remember what it was like worrying whether you had enough coin to pay your bills?
This is why I love focusing on sports and hate politics. With sports, you care passionately about something that in the big scheme of things doesn't really matter. With politics, if you care deeply about governance and he future of our country, it will just give you an ulcer because it's important but totally screwed.
So, with that, I will take a deep cleansing breath, try not to think about it, and wish you a beautiful day.

1. The British did us a great favor when they burned down Washington D.C and yet we were stupid enough to rebuild it. I remember my grandfather telling me he bought his first car for around $1,200 and his first house for about $9,000. Oh I would love to see prices like that again. But as long as Congress does what it does (with the exception of Ron Paul) and people remain apatheic about it, it will continue. We may end up like Somalia or Rwanda after all.
