Bob Ryan is Boston's most prominent sports journalist, and on ESPN's The Sports Reporters today, he had some surprisingly harsh words about the New England Patriots, the Patriotgate controversy, coach Bill Belichick and even owner Robert Kraft, who for the most part has escaped criticism in this story:
Said Ryan of Belichick, "When this thing broke in September, the day of the Jets game, from that moment on, he has never fessed up, he has stonewalled it, we all know what his punishment was, but he has never addressed it, he has tried to pretend that it never happened, and that 'I just misunderstood the rules.' His day of reckoning, I think, is going to come, and I think that this whole thing that New England has built in seven years is in jeopardy.
For a prominent Boston writer to call the Patriots dynasty "in jeopardy" is rough, but Ryan didn't stop there. He also had something to say about the Patriots' owner:
"The person who has to take the initiative here is the owner, Bob Kraft. I cannot believe that Bob Kraft was pleased, during the course of this season, with the image of his team," Ryan said. "They are the most vilified team in sports, and I can't believe he likes this. He has allowed this coach to do it his way to this point and I don't see how he can allow him to do it his way any longer."

Bob Ryan is an idiot. I know this because I get the Boston Globe every single morning and read the crap that he writes. All year long, this guy was protecting the Patriots and talking about how great they are when the hype was going on, and then suddenly he turns his back now that the Pats are losers and cheaters? Why don't you just actually have an opinion of your own other than just jumping from this bandwagon to another?

Ryan should stick to covering baseball. His opinion on Belichick and Kraft is unwarrented and distorted.
Both men took an underachieving franchise that was laughable and made the team a joy for us Pats fans to watch.
Previous owners of the Pats included Pat Sullivan, a man with no money and less brains; Robert Orthwein, a man with Budweiser money and brains who threatened to take the team to Hartford if the state didn't give him more money; and Victor Kiam, a man with a little money and a crummy electric shaver company. It has been an arduous journey to football prominence and Bob Ryan writes for a paper that is irrelevant and liberal communist in its editorials.

Ryan is not an idiot. He has finally realized that the Patriots organization is hated across America mainly because Bellichick is an arrogant cheater.
Kraft should have been blamed a long time ago. In any business if someone behaved as badly as Bellichick has the owner has to take responsibility.
Kraft has buried his head in the sand purposely and is behavior has been as bad as Bellilchick and that is dispicable at best.

Ryan at one time was a great source of inside info and fun to read, IF he knows anything now, he should share it. At this point he is to full of himself now that he has all his awards. Time to retire to the Cape, Bob. Get out while you still have a decent rep...

THIS CHEATING STUFF HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS AND ANY "GOOD" SPORTS WRITER WOULD KNOW THAT. BOB RYAN AND OTHERS THAT ARE REALLY COMPLAINING MUST HAVE LOST A LOT OF MONEY ON THE GAME. ALL OF THE PAT'S FANS, THAT ARE REALLY FANS, WILL STAND BY THE COACHES AND TEAM 110%. GO PATS IN 2008 - 2009 - NANA

The entire Patroit's organization is an embarrassment to the NFL. Now, the bandwagon Pats fans are whining like kids. Why the hell do you think Goddell burned the evidence?...Maybe cause it's true and a black mark on the league?...BeliCHEAT should be banned from the league to avoid further embarrassment...

Does everyone realize that this was a RULE violation and not a violation of a State or Federal law??? The Rule was broken and all parties paid their price...the highest price paid for a violation of a rule that was broken in any sport in history. Ryan's past history of ponifiacating on a subject to sell papers is well documented. Ryan's a bitter man because Belichick does not cater to the print media and with stories such as this being regurgitated on a daily basis long after the fact, I can't blame Belichick.

I don't understand NE fans, FIRST you guys claimed all year long that the Patsies DIDN'T need to 'tape' other teams to succeed. NOW, all I hear from you guys is how 'widespread' it is in the NFL that it's basically Ok to do it. So what's it going to be? Did or didn't NE need tapes to succeed? HA, I guess the FIRST to admit guilt are the fans. Figures. Belichick and Kraft aren't going to jump in the fire for you guys. NO coach or owner will! I don't blame you for defending your team but sometimes fans like ourselves can be TOO blind to fight a losing battle alone. Do all of us a huge favor NE,...Sell your team, obolish your 'records', get new uniforms, a new coach but keep your current players and start all over. Maybe that'll save you guys some more embarassement in the future.

Not so much about Ryan, but I apeal to the die hard Patriot fan, my wife(who like me hates the PATS)even said today that she feels sorry for the true die hard Pats fans, that they don't deserve this embarassment. That I agree with, but as one fan to another, I went through nine years of losing with the RAMS before the 99" season, the NINERS nick named us "THE SAME OLD RAMS". Before that long aweful run in the 90's, I rmember a season, I think it was 82" the last Malavasi year, the fans were donning bags, and calling our boys "THE LAMBS". Shoot I got "BAAAAH"ed at one day driving home from the sports bar(early 90's), a car full of dudes saw my Jim Everett shirt, and started heckling me, I think it was at a red light, ofcoarse we had just lost one of the 99 games we would lose from 90"-98". We lost big games like your lost to the bears, and PATS, we lost to the Steelers in S.B 14, we were humiliated by the NINERS in the 89"NFC CHAMPIONSHIP 30-3, that same 85" Bears team beat us 24-0, the reason i bring this up is all a fan has when their team is bad is to dream, dream one day they will be like the 90's Cowboys, or Packers, or Broncos, you know, when your losing, and at the same time watching those awesome teams play. You march your John Madden Rams to the S.B behind the arm of Tony Banks, or legs of Lawrence Phillips, you dream, then when the Rams are a juggernaut, 14-2, number 1 O", number 3 D", they scored over 500 pts. for the third straight year, and beat the New England team in Foxboro, Rams recievers slipping around, yet we still win, now we are playing you in the dome, 14 pt favorites, the 85" BEARS were not favored by as much, now I'm thinking dynasties, maybe like a 90's Dallas, you really only need three in the age of free agency, I was happy, all the times I watched those horrible teams, I remember watching a game in the sports bar in the 90's Young hits Rice, Rice catches it with one hand, and scores, then the game just changes to another game because it is such a blowout, I'm in the bar pissed, and embarrassed, those memmories, now we are the NINERS, we are the unstoppable force, and the PATS video tape our walk throughs, 10 bucks sais they were taping our D' signals in Foxboro, why would'nt you, cheat one time, but not the other?, I'm pretty sure they did that, and the abuse of the bump the guy in the 5 yard area rule, Marshall Faulk (who is not a whiner)said that Willie McGhinest was literaly tackling him to the ground, and I read later they did the same thing to the Colts so much, that mild mannered Tony Dungy had to go to the league and complain, and eventually there was some sort of rule change, but last year in the AFC Championship all of a sudden Manning is on fire against your D", hmmmm? So you just can't beleive that someone stole you superbowl(RAMS, and fans), your memmories, you potential dynasty. The Rams were screwed up in the head in 2002, and fell apart after being shocked, and embarrassed. Also, you think Kurt Warner having won two S.B's with the Rams would have lost his job to another qb, no, he would have been cemented in there, now the guys reduced to being a journeyman qb, bouncing around, from team to team, what about Aneas Williams, never got the ring, what about Kordell Stewart, his career was ruined by the AFC Championship game loss in Pitt. As a fan, I'm saying we die hards go throught the tough times, and dream of the "DREAM" championships, and stuff, and then when it's in your grasp somebody robs it. My brother in law knows what a die hard fan i happen to be, and he asked me wouldn't you cheat to win, i said no. This is why,.... I love pro football, I really don't follow college or other leagues, because when you win in the NFL, your the best, that's it, the best, I want to know that when my team wins(We allways say we, like were apart of the team)we are the best, no question, cheating no. I know you guys got to defend your team, I would, I know that. I ' d be going, yeah, yeah, yea, cheating, stop crying WAAAaaaah, you have to, it's like if your brother does something wrong, and a bunch of people are going to beat him up, you will jump into the fight, right, or wrong, man I want a PATS fan to say, yeah your right man, when I started this, but it won't happen, but deap down you guys know what I mean, the die hard Pats fans paid there dues, it is a shame. Funny thing, is maybe withought the cheating, there was enough talent on the team to actually win a legit title, or two, not three, or four, or 19-0, but a championship, at least one, the fans would have loved it, kind of like a Denver, but you wouldn't of beat us, and I think PATS fans would have lived with that, maybe they wouldn't have been there at all anyway, or in any S.B, I really don't know, but I doubt little to do with this teams suscess(o7")PATS had much to do with cheating, if you guys were blowing people out, rubbing in scores, and worrying about the record, maybe you would have won the whole thing, and legit, the PATS should have been resting guys the last two games, the S.B is more important than the record, remember Lombardi said, "Statistics are for losers". I still admire Adam Venaturi, all he knows is he has to kick this clutch kick, no matter what is going on in the game, he still has to make that pressure kick, he won't be tarnished in my mind. Roman Phifer, the man left our team in the end of the 98" season saying i want to finish my career with a winning team, i thought"Gee thanks Phifer!"..."I guess were just doomed!", the next year we won it all, but he came back with the PATS to haunt us later, I was pissed by that, now I realize he never did finish with a winning team!.....SGJINKS "THE RAMMY WHAMMY WILL BE BACK!

Rob cheating on this scale can also been seen as violation of state and federal laws because of gambling. Fixing games is illegal and can be prosecuted for how many millions of dollars are wager on each game. The government can and should investigate these allocations for this fact plus also the NFL TV contracts are because of their anti-trust exception. What the Pats did have major effect not only on the Super Bowl but also the economy of so many cities which were competing against them on an unfair playing field.

What I find hard to believe is that Pats fans are not the ones most upset with Belichick. Here he had a team that was arguably the best collection of talent ever assembled in the history of the NFL and still he did not have faith enough in them to win without spying on his opponents. Getting caught with your pants down cheating to beat the New York Jets is beyond embarrassing. What he has accomplished is that he has forever tarnished the reputations of all these incredibly talented players such as Tom Brady. Brady's records will forever be linked to a coach who thought he had to cheat to win. In NASCAR teams are always pushing the rules to and sometimes beyond the limits to win. After the race, if their car is found to be so much as a fraction out of specs... they forfeit their win. They might still have had the best car and the best driver but it doesn't matter. Cheating is cheating - even if you only cheat a little bit. Maybe fewer teams would be willing to cheat to win if harsher penalties were handed down in other sports.

This is what you get NE fans for having a slug as a coach. Stop the arrogance and quit calling people jealous of you team. The only team that has envy cast upon it is the Giants because they won it all. You guys had a team that broke the rules and all you can say is "other teams are doing it". So I guess that makes it right if other teams are supposedly doing wrong. Is that the same philosophy that you teach your kids, or live your life by? If so, then you are a bad parent/person. It's alright to back your team, but please show some personal responsibility and stop defending what they did.

I do not see how any of the Patriots can take pride in any championships they have won. They were all built on cheating. Belichick has been cheating from day one. I guess he cheated, too, when he was the defensive co-ordinator for Bill Parcells

To all Patriot haters. The pats were caught in the 1st game, 1st quarter of a game. no time to view the tapes. tapes are useless. I would understand all the anger if they were caught in week 12, and undeafeted. then you have a gripe. but the rest of the way , they beat teams and badly, again not our fault other teams stink, (washington) . they complained we ran up the score, hey dummy, our 2nd string was in beating you, thats what they are there for. for the longest time the Pats have been the dormat of the NFL. Now we are good, people are pissed. Is signal stealing wrong, yes, but as they all say, coaches and whom ever, THEY ALL DO IT> You still have to exucute the play, to be succesful.
The NFL should have a rule that there are no cameras allowed on the field at anytime, any where, except for the tv covverage. Problem solved.
Spy Gate- when all is said and done, you will find alot of other teams have done the same thing- we got caught, thats it. What is the NFL going to do when it is leared that this is a rampant problem. They will lose alot of credibility.
Also, if they wish to bring down the Pats and Bellichick, then they should hold all the coaches that worked w/ Belichick accountable. Weiss, Mangini, Romeo, etc..... They all benefited from the Pats, and Belichik, They all were part of the so called cheating, and they all got head coaching jobs and big money from it. If Belichick goes down, they should all go down.Period

Bob Ryan may be the most prominent sports writer FROM Boston, but he is not the most prominent writer IN Boston. In fact, he is a non-factor in this market.
That may be the cause of his bitterness. Irrelevent in his own market. He gets less play than the local radio celebrities at WEEI.
Besides, Peter Gammons is the top individual in sports in Boston.

I don't understand why Bellichick felt he needed to cheat against the Rams in the S.B.. All I heard leading up to that game was how Patriot players lost heroes at the W.T.C.. The Rams might as well have been called the "St. Louis Bin Ladens."
Let's not forget, they didn't even belong in the Super Bowl that year. They were beaten by the Oakland Raiders, but were given a "do over" by the referees.
Hell, after the eighth or ninth game of the season, it became clear that the NFL had such a chubby about an undefeated season, that they told Bellicheat to put his cameras away, and leave the cheating up to them. I really loved the Super Bowl, when, after four of the last seven games the Patriots won questionably, the NFL's credibility had become fractured so badly that they could no longer apply two seperate sets of rules to the Patriots and their opponents and they would actually have to win on their own.
