How much has professional football changed in the last half Century? This much:
That video, courtesy of Hogs Haven, comes from 1958, and it extols the virtues of two great American institutions, professional football and Marlboro cigarettes. It's a reminder of a different time in America, a time when NFL players smoked in the locker room at halftime, a time when an advertising slogan like "you get better makins" apparently made sense, a time when racist caricatures of American Indians were still tolerated.
OK, so we've still got some work to do on that last one, but still, we've certainly come a long way in America. I don't expect the phrase, "Where you find pro football, you find Marlboro cigarettes" to make a comeback.
Oh, and in case you're wondering, the reporter in that video? His name was Chris Schenkel. He died of emphysema.

1. Awesome. Football, racism, and getting kids to smoke. This video should give every Republican a raging boner.

2. Somewhere, there's archive footage of Mark Grace blowing down his last Winston Salem in the Chicago Cubs dugout that needs to be broken out.
