I'm on the record as a big fan of the "This Is SportsCenter" series of commercials, but the newest one, featuring a dunking cockatoo, left me a little disappointed:
The thing that makes this commercial fall short of the great "This Is SportsCenter" commercials, in my view, is the lack of a famous athlete or even famous mascot. The commercials are at their best when they give us the utterly ridiculous juxtaposition of LaDainian Tomlinson sorting mail or Tony Romo having a party at ESPN's headquarters or LSU's mascot stuck in a tree. The dunking cockatoo isn't a recognizable figure in our shared sports consciousness and therefore isn't as funny.

I agree with your stance. This is not the first weak one they've produced though. There have been others.

It makes sense - in many ways Sportscenter is more about the anchors than the athletes, so why shouldn't the ads follow suit?

Yeah, I didn't find it to be nearly as funny as the Richard Simmons spot. Maybe the spot with Stephen King helping John Anderson with his scrpit or even better yet, Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday cleaning the men's room while whistling a tune may be just the ticket.
