Race fans, it was only a matter of time.NASCAR is a very giving sport with several foundations encompassing the entire sport and many drivers having their own as well. The giving has been swift and strong for many years, and well, it may have finally gone over the edge.
Yes, this is more out of control than Operation: Wax Smoke.
Of course, the person involved in the waxing, Tony Stewart, would be the one NASCAR driver to push past the edge of "Hey, that's cool," to "Wow. He's actually selling that. And people are actually buying it."
At least it smells like victory:
Directly after winning the Feb. 25 Stater Bros. 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Auto Club Speedway of Southern California, Stewart signed his Old Spice towel in black ink and handed it over to a charity auction to benefit the Tony Stewart Foundation.
That's just, uh, disgusting. As seen in the picture above, Stewart doesn't just drape the towel on his shoulder.
The charity auction begins at 9 a.m. EST on Tuesday, Feb. 26 and will run until 9 a.m. EST on Tuesday, March 4. Fans can place a bid for the autographed towel by logging on to www.OldSpice.com/products_new.html or www.TonyStewart.com.
Charity, though, must be a shield for all things vile and nasty. Personally, I'd be grossed out in an extreme way if I was standing anywhere near victory lane and Tony Stewart decided to toss me his towel that he just wiped off with.
Sweat, grease, cheap champagne, and oil all on a towel? M'm, now that's a keeper!
I've bought die-cast cars, walked home with sheet metal, grabbed some used lug nuts and bought my share of NASCAR shirts. They all have a place somewhere in my house, but a dirty towel? Really? Where do you proudly display that?
This tradition will continue all season long, with a new towel for each win Stewart has in the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series. Let's just hope there's not a market for his chest hair.
UPDATE: While looking at the Old Spice site, I couldn't find a single place to bid on this item. It has since been found! Check out this listing on ebay for more. Sorry, No Photos

Hey Geoffrey, you call yourself a NASCAR fan? If you look at the picture of Tony, there is a Nextel sign behind him. That picture was from his win at Watkins Glen last year! Also, Tony does not wear his Home Depot Suit in the Nationwide series! It does not surprise me that Tony is doing this as he is one of the most giving and generous drivers in Sprint Cup. Each year he writes a personal check for $1Million to the Victory Junction Gang Camp. Did you know that? Lets show some respect for the 2008 Sprint Cup Champion! Go Tony Go!! On the track and whatever you want to do to support charities.

Tony Stewart is the perfect example of the image Home Depot wants. Look at what a dirt ball he is. His nick name is not Smoke it's Dirt Bag. Would you want this guy to show up at your home looking like an unshaved bum for any home improvement work. Bad image, no wonder the the orange box stores are going into the tank. He needs a TON of old spice.

ahhh.......I would buy it, put it in a glass frame and hang it up. It's not like someone is going to sit around smelling it! And....after all, it IS for charity. Laugh if you want at my little chubby buddy but at least he isn't using steriods, fighting dogs, beating up females or getting arrested for DUI.........

This guy obviously is not a race fan and if he calls himself a reporter, instead of wondering about the affects if a sweaty towel that will bring money to kids who desperatly need it. He should instead go to Utah and find out what's going on with the re-usable needles that have 40,000 people wondering what they caught!

People might think he is rude but hey he is just showing who is really is thats better than trying to be someone you really aren't. Iam a huge fan of Tony Stewart and even with him going to Toyota Iam backing him 100%!

I think its awesome Tony is donating something like that for charity auction. I bought the t-shirt Dale Earnhart wore when he won the 88 Michagin race. Yep it has his sweat, oil, dirt and his signature on it. Its one of my favorite items in my collection.

Yeah Geoffrey. There are not many times Tony Stewart actually acts like a human being. On the rare occassions he does his fans, the ones that generally act like Tony does most of the time, would like you to get the story correct. I am sure it is far more important to them where that picture was taken than the fact you were for the second time this year doing a good story on how there may just be a decent guy after all under that scruff exterior he presents every day.
As for the rest of us, we think it is another good story on how these drivers can do almost nothing yet be a huge help to charity organizations around the country. Keep telling the world how Nascar drivers give their name and their support to help people that need a little. Most of us don't really care if the picture is an old file photo or not.

I would buy it only if was cheaper than my favorite 12 pack of toilet paper. I would get great satisfaction in wiping my azz on it! Tony is a jerk and why any company would use hims as a spokesperson is beyond me.

I'm a huge NASCAR (not Tony) fan, but this is getting "OUT THERE" even for me. I have gotten in my car and driven 4 hours to go to the track just for an autograph, but I would not bid on anyone's used, sweaty towel.

I don't see the difference between a jersey from a basketball game with sweat on it and a towel. If people want it, so be it! I come from a farming and ranching community and I know all about the so called buy American preachiness. I believe in supporting here at home, buy while you are driving your ford pick-up, stop in at Walmart. Try to find made in America products. Everyone who complains about American vehicles closed done small businesses and factories by taking all the their money to Made in China Walmart. How do you think Mattel moved their lead filled toys to China! We are all guilty!

The author of this article, Geoffrey Miller, obviously dislikes NASCAR. Well, with a name like Geoffrey, I think I can understand where he is coming from! Why didn't Geoffrey mention the following items going up for auction; like the gun that Jack Ruby used to kill Lee Harvey Oswald or the old sweat stained Elvis suit or the Harry Houdini straight jacket.
Geoffrey is just showing his thinly veiled distaste for NASCAR in general!
