Kind of a little shocker with the clock ticking towards free agency, but here's an interesting tidbit from Chris Mortensen -- the Saints made a trade offer to the Giants for happy-go-lucky complete team player Jeremy Shockey. Now let's take all of this with a grain of salt -- standard Mortensenian operating procedure -- but if true, it makes sense. The Saints' offense has lacked a truly dynamic tight end. Billy Miller has played well, but he and Eric Johnson haven't made a real impact on the offense, and both are unrestricted free agents. Paired with Marques Colston, the two could do wonders for the Saints' red-zone offense.
Beyond that, Sean Payton and Shockey are familiar with each other from Payton's days in New York, and Shockey has stated on occasion that Payton was the driving force behind his early development. Re-joining Payton in a change of scenery might make dude a little cheerier. He'll also be free from the most cancerous relationship he has in New York, with Eli Manning.
Shockey won't be able to push around Drew Brees, the team's unquestioned leader and most respected player, like he did Manning, and Brees will get him the ball enough to keep him happy.
If Mortensen is on the ball with this report, that is.

1. I think that Shockey in black and gold would kick major arse. And I really agree that his trouble-making skills may be lessened here. He may have even had some awakening after what happened w/ the Giants without him.

Are you on crack? I am asking seriously.

3. I THINK IF I'M SHOCKEY I'D TONE MY ACT DOWN, HE BETTER REALIZE THAT THIS IS ELI TEAM AND IF HE FORGETS IT THE REST OF THE TEAM WILL REMIND HIM, AND ALSO THE GUY WHO HE REALLY BUTTED HEADS WITH COACH COUGHLIN JUST GOT A 4YR EXTENSION AND IF HE MAKES WAVES, TALENT OR NO TALENT HE'S A GONER ALSO LET'S NOT FORGET ROOKIE TE KEVIN BOSS WHO PLAYED EXCEPTIONALLY WELL DOWN THE STRETCH AND IN THE SUPER BOWL. THE GIANTS ARE NOT GOING TO BE AS PATIENT

4. Shockey kinda reminds me of Kyle Turley...I am not sure we need that kind of trouble on this team. O line is where we need real help. Then a real #2 receiver. Henderson & Cooper did not make it last season...Patton and Lance are 3's and Meachem was a bust. Although a tight end could help with the line...Shockey is not a blocker...and Drew won't be able to throw to him from his back!

5. Bourbon Street just might not ever be the same with Shockey in town.

6. #4....Shockey may have other issues but blocking isn't one of them.

7. Clayton just reported that the Saints are close to a trade deal with the JETS for Vilma. If he's healthy, that's EXACTLY the MLB we need!

8. I don't see why our Oline needs help. They were at the top for fewest sacks allowed. And it's waaay to early to label Meachem a bust. C'mon now. Reggie is closer to bust status than Meachem (and I am in no way saying Reggie is a bust cuz it's too early to tell for him too).

11. What is not mentioned in this article and what is most important is who can the Saints give the Giants? It makes sense for the Saints, but my Giants should get a good player in exchange or two drafts picks.

12. Shockey is done. The Giants play better without him.

13. Shockey is a ball hog. Giants played much better after he broke his leg. They would have never won the Super Bowl, if he was playing.

14. While your all reading these posts again....Gibril Wilson has just signed with the Oakland Raiders...Torbor with Miami and Mitchell with Buffalo
I hope your plan is going on as scheduled Jerry?

15. not playing in the super bowl will make shockey that more hungry.i agree he is overated, but is still an asset when used correctly.

16. Jerry's got it under control John. Wilson and Mitchell are not premier players at their positions, and definitely got paid for the super bowl, not past performance. If you remember, Mitchell was lucky to get signed by the Giants last year. The most important move Jerry made was resigning Justin Tuck during the playoffs. Thats the move. Tuck is going to fit in Strahans slot very nicely when he retires. Jerry's already filled Wilsons spot. We have Kiwanuaka coming back to play outside backer, and Gerris Wilkerson to play the other side. And we havent even gotten to the draft yet, where last year jerry had arguably the greatest overall success of any giant draft ever. So lets see what happens before you panic.

17. Firstly, the saints need to offer the Titans a 3rd or 4th round pick for Pacman Jones. I can almost guarantee that he will stay out of trouble, he relizes he wont have another chance w/ the league. Thats sures up our DB situation w/ gay. So then that leaves us with the #10 pick in this years draft. With Duece not likely to finish the season ahead, we should think about having a more of a spread offense w/ 2 very good reciever like tailbacks. If we drafted Rashard Mendenhall out of ILLINOIS, our offense would be literally unstoppable. And think about this, we could also use Reggie Bush w/ Mendenhall on kick returns(kickoff$Punts). Mendenhall is an outstanding runner in between the tackles and has top end to end speed w/big play potential on every play. To me this seems unbeatable. We saw in 06 what a good 2 running back system can do.

18. I say, if Shockey wants to come, bring him on. I am not worried about his feisty attitude so much because he WANTS to come here and he respects Sean Payton(who I believe would keep Shockey in line anyway). I think he is the best of both worlds: a veteran with the hunger of a college freshman. He would greatly complement the impressive draft picks as well as free agent class that have recently signed up with the team. I believe we will see a different type of Shockey attitude if we can see him in a situation he believes is amenable, and would thus enable him to be the truly productive player he intends to be. I would also like to say that I agree with some of the above comments about our offensive line. It doesn't matter if we have the greatest players in the league playing for the Saints if Drew Brees isn't given enough protection to actually be able to deliver the ball to any of them.
