In the end it wasn't the Jaguars, Jets, or Broncos -- the only three teams seriously connected with Shaun Rogers rumors -- who walked away with the big guy. ESPN is reporting that it's the Bengals who are taking Rogers from the Lions. No terms of the trade have been mentioned.I wrote not too long ago that in a new environment Rogers' drive might be sparked, harnessing his full potential. I still think that holds true of, oh, 29 of the environments the Lions could have cast Rogers into. But I'm not sure Cincinnati is the best place for him.
They've got a need for Rogers, for sure. But, you know, they're not the most talented or disciplined unit, especially on defense. Maybe the arrests have gone down, but the level of play has, as well, and Rogers' lackadaisical attitude seems mirrored across almost the entirety of the roster. In short, the Bengals are pretty much just a Halloween-tinted version of the Lions.
I'm sure this isn't the case, but it seems like the Lions dealt Rogers to the place where he'd have the least success out of spite. Shaun needs a mentor. He got a bunch of enablers.
Update: The Lions are receiving the Bengals' third- and fifth-round picks in exchange for Rogers.

Whoa, let's not go so far as to say the Bengals are as bad as the Lions. At least the Bengals have one playoff game in, say, the past ten years. And they have a much better shot at winning with Carson Palmer at quarterback than (although I really do admire him) John Kitna. Chad Johnson AND TJ Houshmandzadeh are better than every Lions receiver. Even Kenny Watson is better than Kevin Jones. In fact, the Bengals are better at every offensive position than the Lions. So, Shaun Rogers just got traded to a team with a much better offense but same lousy defense. But, at least that defense is improving- Jonathan Joseph, Leon Hall, Robert Geathers, among others. Hopefully they'll add a stud like Sedrick Ellis to help. Plus, with Marvin Lewis on the hot seat, I expect the Bengals to be better in '08, especially with a new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. This move speaks to the fans as well- frugal Mike Brown went out and actually made a significant move in the first day of free agency!

Well I guess this is all a moot point since the whole deal has been called off. This will hurt the Bengals since he's being traded to a division rival, but I feel the Browns may have given up too much anyway in this deal.

Yes,the deal ran afoul of the salary cap.The Browns give up a lot in Leigh Bodden and a 3rd.The Browns desperately had to plug their D-Line,and have done so with Rogers and Corey Williams. We will have to see what else the Browns have in mind now for their secondary.Trust me,they're far from finished.

Being a Browns fan for years I see that we are finally getting some heads turned. We need defense and it looks like Savage is doing exactly what he said he would do .... address it in free agency or the draft. Guess he doesn't see anything in the draft that will still be there in now the fourth round. He stresses continuity and he likes players who are there 14-16 games a year.
