Asante Samuel Claims He Picked the Eagles Because He Wants to Play in the Super Bowl

Here's what Asante Samuel said at the official announcement that he had signed a contract with the Eagles:

"I just want a chance to be able to win and get back to the Super Bowl, and that's why I picked the Philadelphia Eagles," Samuel said.

With all due respect to both the Eagles and Samuel, does anyone actually believe that if he just wants to get back to the Super Bowl, the Eagles are the best team for him to join? The Eagles didn't even make the playoffs last year. Do they really have a better chance of getting to the Super Bowl than, say, the Patriots, where Samuel could have stayed?

The Eagles were willing to pay Samuel more than the Patriots were, and that's why Samuel chose the Eagles over the Patriots. I don't begrudge him that -- and I actually suspect that if he had waited a couple of days and visited a couple more teams, he might have had a better offer than the one he signed with the Eagles. But it's silly to say playing in the Super Bowl is the reason he picked Philadelphia.
