The Word:

Lance Briggs Re-signs With Bears, 49ers Are Horrible at Tampering

Lance Briggs was supposed to make a lot of money once the free-agency floodgates opened at midnight, Feb. 29. Two days into this thing and it hasn't happened. And it won't. From FOX Sports' Jay Glazer:
One year after saying he wanted out of Chicago during a contract impasse, Lance Briggs has decided he wants to be a Bear for the next several years Briggs has agreed to a six-year deal with the Bears that includes approximately $12 million in guaranteed money...
The $12 million in guaranteed dough is nice, but presumably a lot less than what he was expecting when he decided test free agency. The 49ers could've been willing to throw some cash at Briggs, but the whole thing got monkey-wrenched when the team admitted to tampering.

Early speculation had Briggs returning to Chicago if the Bears was worried about the long-term effects of Brian Urlacher's neck injury. But now it seems more like Briggs wasn't as popular as maybe he and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, thought. Or, more likely, they just have really crappy timing/luck.

Remember, the Redskins were willing to do just about anything to acquire Briggs last off-season, and now the team has suddenly quit impulsive free-agency spending cold turkey (no way that lasts). And the 49ers were this close to landing Briggs before they ratted themselves out for tampering.

On the bright side, that's one less thing the Bears' front office has to worry about, and now they can devote more time to figuring out which quarterback they'll draft in two months. Assuming, of course, that Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton aren't the answers.
